It is with much sadness we announce the sudden passing of Courtney Thomas (hooter) Atkinson AKA Uncle Traveling Matt, which occurred at home in Little Anse on December 23, 2023.
Born November 26th, 1958 in Sandy Point, Shelburne County, he was the son of the late Hubert Courtney and Laura Mae (Smith) Atkinson.
Courtney is survived by his wife Wanda (Martel) Atkinson; daughters, Gina (Garth) Urquhart, Amy Atkinson, and Jennifer (Mike) Atkinson; son, Adam Atkinson; grandchildren, Brandon, Carter, Seth, Chase, Tyson, and Ava; brothers, Bruce and Bobbi; sisters, Ruby, Irene, Bonita, Georgia, Louise, Patricia, and Diane; many sister and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
Courtney didn’t always have an easy life, with very little education he got along just fine and made lifelong friendships wherever he went. He worked hard for everything he had and provided well for his #1 priority…his family. He loved his family more than anything. He was a fisherman most of his life, drove trucks, and worked as an oiler for the Canadian Coast Guard. Courtney was a pain in the butt most days but with his smile/smirk and with those sparkling little beady eyes, he was easy to love. He was a husband, father, brother, son, uncle, friend, and the best GRAMPIE. Courtney would give you the shirt off his back or his last dollar even if it meant he went without. Courtney created a junkyard with pride (we see junk, he saw treasures), he was kind, thoughtful, giving, supportive, the best fish maker, accepting, and protective. With Courtney, it was all about the simpler things and he appreciated the little things so very much.
Besides his parents, He was predeceased by his sister Crystal and brothers, Howard, Earnest, and Leroy
It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to Courtney. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. His passing will leave a huge gap in many lives he touched, but he has left us with a ton of fond memories and many Courtney stories to tell in the future.
Special thanks to Codie Forest, Jake (Bird) Boudreau, Trevor Fougere and Jason Weare.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation or service per request.
A celebration of life will be held in his honor on Saturday, January 13th, 2024 from 2-4pm at the Little Anse Social Action Center. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to The Hearts of Isle Madame Disability Society.
