We are sorry to announce the passing of
our mother Ghlee Sharline Doncaster early
Feb 17 2024.
Her husband Allan passed Nov. 21 2023,
leaving sons Rodger with wife Donna and Neal with wife Shona
behind.
Ghlee was born Dec 23 1932 on a farm in
Mount Pleasant NS to Lorne Mattinson & Verna
(MacDonald).
She and her brother Cyril (deceased)
spent most of their youth running barefoot around the fields and
woods.
Being the children of school teachers
they both received honors awards. Mom’s ability to recite
long poems was a power/gift she carried into old age.
During World War 2 her family moved
Amherst to live and work.
Mom and dad either met at the skating
rink where dad’s skating ability so impressed her or at the
bowling alley where dad left the girls he was with and went out of his
way to walk mom home.
Ghlee and Allan started dating. Allan
moved to Toronto and later Ghlee went to Toronto by train and
motorcycle. They had an active outdoor social life and traveled with
friends on motorcycles around the area, which included hill climb
competitions and early trips to the states. They moved back to Amherst
and were married Dec. 27 1952,
Eleven months later Rodger was born, Nov
1953 and Neal followed in Nov. 1956. In 1957 they built the cottage at
Linden which gave them over 60 years of pleasure at the beach. In 1970
we, with help from both families, built our home on Summit
Ave.
Ghlee worked at Douglas & Rogers
insurance after Toronto. After the kids were born, she bucked the
50’s trend and went back to work. She became executive
secretary to company president Rob Lamy. When Rob retired to the golf
cart enterprise, Mom went too.
Mom and dad liked all forms of skating,
badminton and tennis, fishing, water skiing, boating, hiking, camping.
As a Centennial project we four build a log cabin back in the woods in
Mansfield. From there mom and dad hunted, fished and enjoyed a quite
place in the woods she used to running thru.
They both enjoyed travel. As a young
family she explored/showed off part of the Maritimes and the states
and established a love of travel in the children. At the age of 13 and
10 the boys could explore Expo on their own and meet up at mealtime.
Later Ghlee and Allan traveled with friends in the Americas and many
parts of Europe.
Ghlee built a lot of close friends and
she cherished them all. Later when dementia advanced and she could no
longer remember a friend’s name, she remembered the good
times. Singing old songs with friends gave all of us the gift of
joy.
