Fenwick Burnham
1937-2023
It is with great sadness that we share the news of our
father’s passing, Fenwick Burnham on November
23rd. Fenwick, or Fen to some, was
born, and lived his entire life, and died at his home on the Coverdale
Road. He may be the last of the original families who owned
farms going from Salisbury to Riverview.
Fenwick spent his childhood on his parent’s dairy
farm, attending a one room schoolhouse and later Salisbury Regional
High School. It is here that he met the love of his life,
Doreen Eagles. They married and purchased part of the
original homestead which included a home built by his
grandparents. Together, Doreen and Fenwick raised 3
children. They also helped many of Doreen’s
younger siblings learn to drive on the farm, with Fenwick being more
like a big brother to them, rather than a
brother-in-law.
Over the years, many extended family members spent summers at
the farm, learning to make hay, drive a tractor or build go carts and
dune buggies. Fenwick and Doreen both went out of their way
to offer help to anyone who needed it, even welcoming people in the
middle of the night during snowstorms.
Fenwick retired at 55 and decided to give up his side job of
having beef cattle. With the extra time on his hands, too
many cookies were consumed, and he decided he needed a new
hobby. He joined the Lions Club in Salisbury to
everyone’s surprise, and never looked back. While
he enjoyed his 37 years with CN, it never compared to the joy he found
during his 30 years with Lions. His shifts selling 50/50
tickets up at the track and making pancakes on the
3rd Saturday of the month were priorities on
his social calendar. His many years on the board of The
Villa, helping with fundraisers and driving the tractor during the
Salisbury Community Days helped him connect with people in a way that
brought him true happiness. He recently received the prestigious
Melvin Jones Award for his dedication.
Fenwick is survived by his three children, Kim (Vince), David
(Winnifred) and Shelley (Steve), 8 grandchildren (Nicholas, Melinda,
Kyla, Lindy, Mandy, Laura, Jessica, Tyler and special Chinese
grandchild Sherry Liu Shijin), and 4 great grandchildren. He
is also survived by his only sister Ethel, sisters in law Marilyn,
Carolyn, Georgia, Barb, Isabel and brother-in-law
Bill.
Kim, David and Shelley would like to thank the many people
who helped over the recent months, in an effort to keep dad at home,
which was his wish. A special thank you to Pete and Sandra
Vuillemot have been so much more than neighbors over the last 35
years, checking in on dad every day, inviting him to dinner, taking
him on road trips and providing him with assistance on crossword
puzzles. Thank you to our aunt, Marilyn Bishop, who spent
countless hours caring for dad, offering advice and a listening ear.
To Holly of the extra mural team, whose quick action ensured dad was
comfortable right to the end, thank you.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Salisbury
Funeral Home, 3350 Route 106 (506-372-4800) with visiting Monday,
November 27 from 6 pm – 8 pm. The funeral will be held
Tuesday, November 28 at 11 am with Rev. Chris Hayes officiating.
Interment at Five Points Cemetery.
If desired, donations in memory of Fenwick to the Salisbury
Lions Club or Local Food Bank would be appreciated by the
family.
