Obituary of Martha E.W. Graves
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Martha Elizabeth Willa (nee Paynter) Graves on November 26, 2024 peacefully at her home in Westfield, New Brunswick at age 93. She was born on November 7, 1931 to the late James “Harvey” and Alma (nee Peacock) Paynter.
Martha is survived by her sons Charles and Brian, and sister Pearl Foster (Ontario). She was predeceased by her husband Goldwyn (Goldie), brothers Charles, John, James (Dick) and Dean, and sister Jean.
Martha grew up in Upper Gagetown then moved to Fredericton where she met and married Goldie. They had Charles and Brian, then in 1962 moved from Westmorland Street to a new home up the hill on Smythe Street. In 1972 Goldie (with family) was transferred to Saint John and in 1977 they settled in Westfield.
Westfield proved to be a great base for Martha. She was blessed with superb neighbours who became close friends. An excellent cook, Martha enjoyed baking and would periodically drop off a plate of goodies at Dr. Scott’s office and for “the girls” at the Bank of Nova Scotia in Grand Bay.
Her summer paradise, from the early 1960s onward, was the cottage at Grand Lake. Both in Westfield and at Grand Lake Martha engaged in one of her favourite pastimes, flower gardening. She enjoyed making various crafts, restoring furniture, and around the age of 70 took up painting in a weekly session held at Westfield United Church. Our home will continue to display her inspiring work.
The family wishes to thank Lesley, Karen, Adesola, Daniela and Tracy for their considerate care, along with Patricia P., Patricia M. and Karen B. of the New Brunswick Extra-Mural Program for their professional assistance.
Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Friday, December 13 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 14 at 1:30 p.m. at Westfield United Church, 133 Nerepis Road, Grand Bay–Westfield, NB. A reception will follow in the basement of the church. Interment will be held at a later date.
Donations in memory of Martha may be made to the Saint John High School Scholarship Fund for the Mark Rankin Memorial Award or a charity of the donor’s choice. Online condolences can be placed at www.brenansfh.com.
