Leona LeBlanc Obituary
Leona Marie Blanche (Goguen) LeBlanc passed away on Sunday June 23, 2024 at Parkland’s Tucker Hall surrounded by the love of her family. Born December 9, 1936 in Moose River, NS, she was a daughter of the late Olivier and Alice (Bernard) Goguen. Her family moved to Rogersville, NB when she was an infant.
She married Eugene in 1953 and they moved to Saint John, NB soon after to begin and raise what would become a family of 7 children. When the older children married, Leona and Eugene moved back to Rogersville with their youngest child where they farmed brussel sprouts for McCains and a big garden for the family which included potatoes. They returned to Saint John several years later to enjoy the growing family which now included several grandchildren, and then grew to include many great-grandchildren.
Our Mom was a consummate baker, knitter, and quilter. She lovingly managed a household with 7 children and there was always room at the table for any friends that accompanied us home. We think the friends came because they wanted to sample the fresh baked bread that she made several times a week, and her delicious raisin pies and molasses cookies. She was also a bookkeeper for our Dad’s construction business, in spite of only having a grade 8 education. Mom, along with our Dad, was a founding member of the 30 Up Club and was a proud and faithful member of Paroisse St.-Francois de Sales Catholic church.
In later years, she was the Head Chef at the Centre Scolaire Samuel-de Champlain. After her retirement, she volunteered at the school with the after-hours program. The teenagers who attended found her to be strict but also fair and knew she wouldn’t let them get away with inappropriate behaviour or language. When she moved to the Chateau de Champlain after our Dad passed, she became the Ambassador for the Chateau – her role was to greet and make welcome all new residents, and it was a role she embraced with her usual grace and no-nonsense attitude.
She moved to Tucker Hall after suffering a broken hip which left her with very limited mobility. She never complained about her situation and if you were to ask her how she was, her answer was always ‘ça va bien’. Our Mom passed on her great love of babies to her children and she inspired us to be kind, generous, loyal and faithful. Her love for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was very evident – she loved us well and was well-loved, and will be greatly missed. To her family, she was known as Mame, Memere, and grand-Memere – all names she wore very proudly.
Along with her parents, Leona was pre-deceased by her husband Eugene in 2011, her sister Geneva Richard, her brothers France, Omer, and Rodrigue, and baby France. She is survived by her three sons Gilles (Patti), George, and Ivon (Bonnie); four daughters Murielle Snodgrass (David), Francine Dobbelsteyn (Rodney), Claudette Cormier (Lawrence) and Monique LeBlanc (Donald); brothers Reginald Goguen and Romeo Goguen, sisters Carmel Steen and Yolande Mullin, sisters-in-law Doreen Goguen and Bernice Goguen, as well as 17 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, several cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as numerous friends.
Resting at Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (506)-646-2424 with visitation hours being held on Thursday, June 27, 2024 between 2-4 and 6-8 PM. Visitation will continue on Friday, June 28th between the hours of 10-11:15 AM followed by a procession to St. Francois-De-Sales Catholic Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 Noon. Reception to follow at the church. Interment will take place at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cemetery after the Reception.
Donations in memory of Leona can be made to Bobby’s Hospice or a charity of your choice.
A heartfelt thank you to all the staff at Tucker Hall. We are very grateful for the wonderful care, love and compassion shown to our Mom during her four year residence, and to our family while she was in palliative care.
