Obituary of Joanne Marie Coates
It is with much sadness that the family of Joanne Coates of Rothesay, N.B. announces her passing on May 11, 2024, at Bobby’s Hospice in Saint John, N.B. She was the daughter of the late Blanche (née MacIntosh) and the late Emile Allain of Neguac, N.B.
Joanne is survived by her loving family: her husband Steven, sons; David (Camille) of Quispamsis and Michael (Stephanie) of Dieppe, grandchildren; Louis, Maisie and Lily, sister Alice Allain (Bill Morton) of Fredericton, brother Eric Allain (Denise) of Moncton and half brother Brian O’Leary (Moira) of Lower Sackville N.S., mother-in-law Joan Coates of Saint John, sister-in-law Linda Coates-Markle of Washington State, nieces Sylvie Morton (Jeff Mott) of Fredericton and Christine Allain (Maxime Bourgeois) of Memramcook, nephews Bradley Markle of Boulder Co., and Marc Allain (Charline) of Moncton.
Joanne was devoted to her family and was our cheerleader whose memory we will deeply cherish. She was very grateful for her two sons, David and Michael whom she loved so much and who were so very good to her. Joanne was thrilled to become a Mémé (grandmother) and cherished Louis, Maisie and Lily who brought her so much joy.
Born Joanne Marie Allain in Tracadie, N.B. on September 27, 1955; she grew up in Neguac, N.B. Joanne obtained her Bachelor of Nursing at the Université de Moncton in 1977 and then practiced at Dr. Georges L. Dumont Hospital in Moncton prior to teaching at the École d’Enseignement Infirmier Providence Nursing School. She then obtained her Masters in Nursing at l’Université de Montréal in 1985. Upon Joanne’s marriage and move to Saint John from Montreal; she was employed as a public health nurse for 29 years until her retirement in 2014. She truly enjoyed her career during which many life-long wonderful friendships were made.
Joanne had a strong faith and was a member of the Saint Francois de Sales Church congregation and choir in Millidgeville. It was very rewarding for her to participate in the “50 Plus Women Who Care” and the “Avenue B” organizations in Saint John as well as the retired Public Health Nurses group.
Having lots of energy; Joanne loved to be active including many sporting activities throughout her life. She took much pleasure being in the great outdoors. Joanne also enjoyed adventures abroad and at the family cottage on Bellisle Bay for many years. She was usually our “spark plug” when something needed doing or to be planned! Joanne will be fondly remembered for her kindness, generous heart and her eternally positive attitude towards people or situations. She was truly a “people person” who was very engaging with a caring interest in others and a good-natured sense of fun. We will miss our Joanne more than words can say but she will remain in our hearts always.
Our family would like to express our heartfelt thanks for all of the ongoing support and compassion shown to Joanne by family and friends since her diagnosis and throughout her illness. We were very blessed and are grateful for all of your kindness. We also wish to thank the wonderful and caring Oncology and Palliative teams at the SJRH as well as the Extra-Mural Nursing and Bobby’s Hospice teams who provided much kind assistance and comfort to Joanne.
We would like to invite friends and relatives to join our family for a reception in celebration of Joanne at the Kennebecasis Community Funeral Home, 152 Pettingill Road, in Quispamsis, N.B. (506-849-2119) on Thursday, May 23, 2024, from 3:00pm until 7:00pm.
In keeping with Joanne’s wishes; there will be a private family funeral Service.
For those who wish; a memorial donation could be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, to the Saint Francois de Sales church congregation in Millidgeville or to a charity of your choice.

Joanne laisse dans le deuil sa famille aimante : son mari Steven, ses fils David (Camille) de Quispamsis et Michael (Stéphanie) de Dieppe, ses petits-enfants Louis, Maisie et Lily; sa sœur Alice Allain (Bill Morton) de Frédéricton, son frère Eric Allain (Denise) de Moncton et son demi- frère Brian O’Leary (Moira) de Lower Sackville (N.-É.); sa belle-mère Joan Coates de Saint-John, sa belle-sœur Linda Coates-Markle de l’état de Washington, ses nièces Sylvie Morton (Jeff Mott) de Frédéricton et Christine Allain (Maxime Bourgeois) de Memramcook, ses neveux Bradley Markle de Boulder Co. et Marc Allain (Charline) de Moncton.
Joanne était dévouée à sa famille et en était le rayon de soleil, nous nous souviendrons tendrement d’elle. Elle était extrêmement reconnaissante envers ses deux fils, David et Michael qu’elle aimait profondément et qui ont été si bons avec elle. Joanne était ravie de devenir une mémé et elle a chéri Louis, Maisie et Lily qui lui ont apporté tellement de joie.
Née Joanne Marie Allain à Tracadie (N.-B.) le 27 septembre 1955; elle a grandi à Néguac (N.-B.). Joanne a obtenu son baccalauréat en soins infirmiers à l’université de Moncton en 1977 et a travaillé à l’hôpital Dr. Georges L. Dumont de Moncton avant d’enseigner à l’École d’enseignement infirmier de Providence. Elle a ensuite obtenu sa maitrise en soins infirmiers à l’université de Montréal en 1985. Après son mariage et son déménagement de Montréal à Saint-Jean; elle a travaillé comme infirmière pour le système de santé publique pendant 29 ans jusqu’à sa retraite en 2014. Elle a vraiment apprécié sa carrière pendant laquelle de nombreuses et merveilleuses amitiés se sont nouées pour la vie.
Joanne avait une foi inébranlable; elle était membre de la congrégation et de la chorale de l’Église Saint-François-de-Sales à Millidgeville. Elle a fièrement fait partie des organisations «50 Plus Women Who Care» et «Avenue B» à Saint-Jean en plus d’être membre du groupe des infirmières retraitées du système de santé publique.
Ayant beaucoup d’énergie, Joanne adorait être active, elle a pris part à plusieurs activités sportives au cours de sa vie. Elle se plaisait à profiter du grand air. Joanne aimait aussi autant les aventures à l’étranger et que les moments passés au chalet familial à Bellisle Bay pendant ces dernières années. Elle était l’initiatrice de plusieurs projets; toujours là quand quelque chose devait être fait ou planifié. On se souviendra tendrement de Joanne pour sa gentillesse, pour la générosité de son cœur ainsi que pour son attitude éternellement positive envers les autres et les situations.
Elle était une personne sociable qui s’intéressait de façon bienveillante aux personnes qui l’entouraient et elle savait profiter de la vie. Joanne va nous manquer plus que les mots ne peuvent l’exprimer, mais elle restera pour toujours dans nos cœurs.
Notre famille tient à exprimer ses remerciements sincères pour tout le soutien et la compassion que Joanne a reçu par la famille et ses amis depuis son diagnostic et tout au long de sa maladie. Nous avons été choyés et nous sommes reconnaissants pour toute votre gentillesse. Nous tenons aussi à remercier l’équipe fantastique d’oncologie et de soins palliatifs au SJRH et l’équipe de «Extra Mural Nursing et Bobby’s Hospice» qui ont offert de l’aide et du réconfort à Joanne.
