Obituary of Alvin Milton Scott
The passing of Alvin Milton Scott of Saint John, occurred on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born on August 8, 1944, in London, England he was the son of the late Alvin M. Scott and Annie (Gradley) Scott. He is predeceased by his loving wife Linda (Osborne) Scott.
Affectionately known as Scotty by his colleagues, friends and family, Alvin devoted 37 years to Public Service, spending 10 years in the Canadian Armed Forces and 27 years as a firefighter at CFB Gagetown. He worked a second job in between his shift work duties as a firefighter driving his own taxicab in Oromocto to make ends meet and provide for his family. In his semi-retirement he worked part time as a Commissionaire on the Saint John Harbour Bridge. Alvin was an extremely hard-working man. He was dedicated to his children and providing for them. He was caring, loving and compassionate and was known to be a big softy with his emotions by his children who loved him deeply. He had a heart as big as the Leo that he was.
We will miss you greatly, Dad. You loved unconditionally and without judgment. You were supportive, understanding and so proud of the achievements of your children. You listened and you were always there to pick us up when we fell down. You cared enough to not always punish us for our mistakes and, when you felt you had to, we all knew it hurt you more than us. You taught us the tough lessons and you were never one to let us blame others. Accountability was a life lesson learned. Often you would say, “When you point the finger at someone else, you have three pointing back at you.” You were always the one we could count on when life got rough and, because of you, your hard work and your endless love for us, we made it. We are all better people because of you and you will be in our hearts forever.
Alvin enjoyed traveling and geocaching with his wife Linda and together they had many adventures. He enjoyed seeing his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and loved to learn about all of their lives. Alvin loved genealogy and could track his family roots back hundreds of years. Family history was something he was very passionate about. He loved playing darts and cards and dancing and he was a proud, active member of the Royal Canadian Legion.
Alvin will be lovingly remembered by his children, Chantale Hofman (Steve) of Bogotá, Karen Baillie (Dan) of Vancouver, Kevin Scott (Courta) of Nova Scotia, Letisha Eastwood (Chris Clark) of Saint John, Tracy Bogle of Saint John and Brent Bogle of Edmonton; precious grandchildren Sarah, Matthew, Connor, Regan, Cielle, Scott and Annie; adored great grandchildren Isabelle, Adeline and Emmett; siblings Valerie Adams (Keith) and Paul Scott (Joan); first wife, Louisette Scott and several nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424). A visitation will be held on Saturday, April 20, 2024 from 1 pm to 2 pm with a funeral service to follow at 2 pm in the Brenan’s Chapel. A burial will take place at a later date. For those who wish, donations may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 22, Grand Bay-Westfield.
