Elise “Tootsie”
Landry passed away at the Sackville Memorial Hospital
on Saturday September 7, following a brief illness. She was
in her 99th year.
Born in Middle Sackville, Elise was the
youngest daughter of Matthias “Mack” and Edna
Legere.
Besides her parents, Elise was
predeceased by her beloved husband Tony, brothers Hector, Roy, Fred,
John, Eddie, and Lorne, and sisters Ina, Mary and
Phyllis.
Elise is survived by her brother,
Camille, of Gardner, Massachusetts; and by her daughter, Andrea
(Peter), three grandchildren: Michael (Sarah), Rachel (Evan) and
Douglas (Meg) and treasured great-grandson Vincent, all of whom reside
in Ontario. She leaves behind several other cherished family
members and friends who were important figures in her life in
Sackville, notably niece Doreen Johnson (Alan), nephew Brent McFee
(Carolyn), nephew Edgar Landry (Rosie), niece Janice Landry, and her
special and devoted friends, Sheila and Gerry Parker.
Tootsie was a social lady and belonged
to many organizations in her lifetime, including St.
Vincent’s Parish and the Catholic Women’s League,
the seniors’ glee club, the Sackville Senior’s Club and the
Sackville Legion Ladies Auxiliary, where she was proud to be a life
member. She was an avid bowler and loved to play Bingo and
cribbage. In her younger days, she enjoyed hosting and
preparing huge meals, usually in the summer heat, for relatives who
visited from away. In later years her delicious baking was
eagerly anticipated by her grandchildren – especially at
Christmas time.
For many years she loved to ride the
train to Montreal or Ottawa to visit relatives, but she was happy to
call Sackville home her whole life. She loved outings to
Patterson’s Family Restaurant and getting ice cream at
Trueman’s.
Though she enjoyed her independence,
Elise was most recently a happy resident of the Autumn Lee special
care home in Sackville. Special thanks to the steadfast
volunteers from St. Vincent’s, whose weekly visits nourished
her spirit when she was no longer able to attend Mass. Her
brief stay at the Sackville Memorial Hospital was filled with
attentive and kind care by team members, from the helpful folks in the
kitchen to the cheerful cleaners and the understanding, supportive
health care team. Caregivers Beverley, Brittny and Taylor
will be remembered for their compassionate care in her final
days.
Arrangements are under the care of
Jones Funeral Home, Sackville,
(506-364-1300) from where visitation and reception will be held on
Friday, September 13, from 4 to 6 PM, with a Funeral Mass to follow at
St. Vincent’s Roman Catholic Church, Friday at 6 pm. Burial
will follow in the Holy Rosary Cemetery.
If desired, friends may donate in memory
of Tootsie to the Holy Rosary St. Vincent Cemetery, the Sackville
Memorial Hospital Foundation, or the charity of their
choice.
