Obituary
John (Jack) Douglas Carleton, 93, of Moncton, passed away peacefully at The Moncton Hospital on Friday, November 17, 2023. Born in Moncton, he was the son of the late Charles and Alice (nee Cobb) Carleton.
John retired from CNR as a brakeman/conductor. When not working John was a keen handyman, the original up-cycler. If any of his children needed anything they would always go to Dad first as he invariably had the required item in his basement or garage. A keen reader, his tastes included history, politics, sports, and a good spy novel. Every Saturday he would pick up his Globe and Mail and eagerly read it for the next two days.
A lifelong Leafs fan, John was also the consummate hockey dad/grandpa. He took his children and grandchildren to countless hockey tournaments and somehow always won the 50/50 draw. From teaching us to skate on the backyard rink, to tying skates at 5am practices, he handed down his love of sports to his children and grandchildren.
John was awarded the Senate Sesquicentennial Medal in 2017. The medal was presented in recognition of valuable service to the nation and to honour the unsung heroes of Canada. This medal typifies how John approached life: selfless with a willingness to help whenever needed.
John will be sadly missed by his children, Kimberly Smart (Terence) and Jeffrey Carleton (Mary Jane Richards); son in law, Peter Babin; daughter in law, Kathleen Quigg; grandchildren, Nicholas, Zachary, Liam, Seth, Kate, Alexander, Elly, Kathleen and Scott.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Nadine (Cunningham) Carleton (2009); daughter, Karolyn (2005), and son, Craig Carleton (2016).He was the last of his immediate family predeceased by brothers William, Robert, Harold, Charles, Ralph, Stuart, and two infant siblings.
Visitation at Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (506-858-1995) on Thursday, November 23, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Funeral to be held on Friday, November 24, 2023 at 10:00 am from Fergusons Funeral Home Chapel. Reception to follow. Interment will take place at Fair Haven Memorial Gardens.
