Forever in our
hearts
It is with
great sadness that we announce the passing of Freddie (Alfred)
Gautreau on July 1, 2024, at the age of 95. Born in Moncton, NB, he
was the son of the late Élias and the late Gladys (Larkins)
Gautreau.
In his early
years, Freddie worked at Saint John News and Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. He
was a 4th-degree member of the Knights of Columbus (Council 1310),
working for the Columbus Club until his retirement and embodying the
values of charity, unity, and fraternity.
Freddie was a
passionate Yankees fan, even travelling to New York in 1956 to watch
Mickey Mantle and his team in a 10-game home stretch. He also found
joy watching Gordie Howe with the Detroit Red Wings. His love for the
music of Frank Sinatra and Jim Reeves was well-known, and he often
filled the family home with their timeless melodies. An avid reader,
Freddie was also a great storyteller with a remarkable memory and a
keen talent for delivering witty one-liners that brought laughter to
many.
He cherished
family cottage life at Cocagne Cape, where he found peace in the
beauty of nature. He took pleasure in sunsets, sitting in the shade,
tending to the flower garden, and living in the
moment.
His dedication
to his family was unwavering and unconditional. In 1959, he married
his sweetheart, Gerry Wilbur. Together, they raised three children:
Ron (Lilibeth), Chuck (Tammy), and Marc. Freddie and Gerry spent many
happy days supporting their sons in hockey and music. His presence was
a constant source of love and
encouragement.
Freddie is
predeceased by his siblings Eva, Edna, Gladys, and Eddie. He is
survived by his beloved wife Gerry, his children, grandson Zachary,
great-granddaughter Mackenzie as well as many nieces and nephews.
Known for his integrity, his legacy of love, kindness, and dedication
will live on in their hearts and will continue to inspire those who
were fortunate enough to be part of his
life.
The Gautreaus
extend their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at both
Faubourg du Mascaret (Pavillon Landry) and Extra Mural (Program
Blanche-Bourgeois) for their care and
support.
Gerry, Ron,
and Chuck wish to recognize Marc for being Freddie’s caregiver for the
past five years.
The family
will be having a private celebration of Freddie’s
life.
