David Morris Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of David George Morris of Moncton, NB announces his passing on February 4, 2024. Dave was born in Chatham, NB to Clyde and Jean (Gulliver) Morris. He will be dearly missed by his wife of over 66 years Clare (Neal); his daughters and sons-in-law Barbara and John Sadler of Pointe-du-Chêne, NB and Beth and Lorne Gaudet of Charlottetown, PE; and his daughter-in-law Lisa Morris of Moncton. Dave was a much loved grandfather to Jennifer Sadler of London, ON, Ryan Morris of Richibucto Village, NB, Rebecca Sadler (Ashley Lintott) of Scarborough, ON, Cody Morris, of Coombs, BC and Lauren Gaudet of Charlottetown and a proud great grandfather to Charlotte Lintott-Sadler. Dave is survived by his brother William “Bill” Morris of Fredericton, NB and nephews Dean Morris (Hilary March) of Merrimack, NH, Bill Morris of Fredericton and Alan Neal (Liz) of Grand Bend ON. He was pre-deceased by his beloved son Jim Morris of Moncton, his brother-in-law Bob Neal and his sisters-in-law Irene Neal and Dale Morris.
During Dave’s early years in Chatham he was surrounded by the love of family and community. To the end, he always identified as “being from the Miramichi” and he had many fond memories of the people and activities of his youth. After graduation Dave moved to Moncton where a young woman who was singing in the choir named Clare caught his attention. Dave and Clare started their married life in Moncton while he worked hard to establish a career in sales. A new position with Cody’s Limited, a restaurant and sanitation supply firm, would move the family to Saint John and in time Dave moved up the ranks at Cody’s from sales to President of the company. As part of his role, Dave also joined the Canadian Sanitation Group (CSG) representing Cody’s. He and Clare travelled across the US and Canada with CSG colleagues who would become friends for life.
Throughout his life Dave was dedicated to giving back. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge (Keith Lodge) and active in the United Church at St. Mark’s in Saint John and St. John’s in Moncton. Dave also served on the executive of several local sporting associations in Saint John. Dave’s commitment to the work of the Y’s Men Club was truly extraordinary. As a member in both Moncton and Saint John he acted as Club President, International Director of the Maritime Region and Area President, Canada. In 1996 he was honoured to be the second Canadian ever to be elected International President. Dave and Clare were privileged to travel the world as Dave led the Y’s Men International mission of service.
The family cottage at Pointe-du-Chêne was a favourite gathering place. Entertaining family and friends gave Dave pure joy. An early Saturday morning visit to the Shediac wharf was a sure sign that cooking, cracking and serving up platters of lobster would soon follow. Dave would always enjoy a game of golf, a hand of cribbage or poker, hunting down stamps for his extensive collection and watching the Blue Jays.
In his long and full life, Dave would say his family was his true legacy. He loved wholeheartedly, teased adoringly, worried constantly and helped always. He kept track, took pride in accomplishments and on a very rare occasion let one of his grandkids beat him at crib. He will be truly missed.
Dave’s family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff at the Briarlea on Ryan. Their care and compassion at a difficult time is something for which the family will be forever grateful.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road (506-858-1995), Moncton.
