Obituary
In Loving Memory of Richard “Cuffy” McLaughlin
1946 – 2023
Richard “Cuffy” McLaughlin, husband of Janet (Simpson) McLaughlin of Miramichi, passed away at his home on November 10, 2023 at the age of 77.
Born in Chatham, NB, on July 16, 1946, Richard “Cuffy” McLaughlin was the son of the late Jean (Nash) and Frank “Cuffy” McLaughlin.
“Cuffy” as he was well known was as talented as he claimed to be. He was the president of the Chatham Legion Branch #3 and was an executive member for many years. Many may remember him as the New Year’s Baby. He was also a member of the Miramichi City Police Force for 32 years, and now most are told stories about his era of the police force. During his time on the police force he also played baseball for the Chatham Ironmen, which ended with his #4 being retired and being inducted into the New Brunswick Hall of Fame for baseball and hockey. No nearby areas was safe when he got to the plate.
He was incredibly strong and carried an enforcer reputation in his younger years. In his spare time he enjoyed playing both darts and horseshoes with family and friends. In his post retirement, he became quite the captain on the Miramichi River, with his boat the “Bailey Ben” named after his two eldest grandchildren. He later invested his time into a camp near Renous, NB where he hunted moose, drove his four wheeler with his friends and family, which eventually he upgraded to a side by side.
He also was an incredibly big fan of the Toronto Blue Jays, along with his wife, Janet, you could walk in the door and be able to tell how the game was going. The clapping meant Toronto just made a big hit while the yelling meant they missed a ball “Cuffy” thought he could’ve caught well into his 70’s.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years Janet (Simpson) McLaughlin; two daughters: Tiffany of Napan and Holly (Rene) of Miramichi; one son, Todd (Lina) of Saint Wilfred; one granddaughter, Bailey (Tony) McLaughlin of Fredericton and three grandsons: Ben (Cassidy) McLaughlin of Napan, Kole McLaughlin of Saint Wilfred and Gage McLaughlin of Saint Wilfred; one brother, Gregory (Debbie) McLaughlin and two sisters: Dianne Ramsay and Barbara Cook all of Miramichi; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers: Blair (Edith) McLaughlin and Ian (Barb) McLaughlin and son-in-law Keith MacDonald.
At Cuffy’s request there will be no visitation or funeral service. A Celebration of his life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #3, 18 McCurdy St., Miramichi on Friday, November 17, 2023 from 6-9 pm. A private Interment will be held at Riverside Cemetery.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #3 or Shriners Hospitals for Children – Canada would be appreciated by the family.
Arrangements are entrusted to Adams Funeral Home Ltd., 140 King St., Miramichi, telephone (506) 773-3492. Additionally, messages of condolence may be shared online at www.adamsfh.ca
