Laurencia Kavanaugh
1933-2024
On November 21, 2024, Laurencia Kavanaugh of Grand Falls,
N.B. passed away peacefully to join her husband, Clarence, in eternal
peace. She is survived by her children, Larry Kavanaugh, Greg
Kavanaugh (Karen Michaud) and Sharon (Peter) Klohn. She was Grammy to
Amanda, Laura, Meredith, Andrew and Matthew, and GiGi to Connor,
Aaron, Alexander, Hayden and Sadie. She was predeceased by her
parents, Elisée and Doria, her first child Michael, nine
siblings and her beloved daughter in law, Connie. She will be fondly
remembered by siblings Paul Theriault and Christine
Olsen.
Laurencia’s first task in her new location will
most likely involve a “grand ménage”,
her annual cleaning which involved the washing of windows and walls,
the removal and washing of all the contents of the cupboards and a
thorough scrubbing of the floors. In life she embraced with enthusiasm
whatever hobby or task caught her attention. Cooking vast quantities
of breads, cakes, pies and her famous tourtière, sewing and
quilting well into the night, crafting for hours or simply reading
many, many books – Laurencia did not sit idle. She was a great partner
to Clarence on the farm, a loving mother, a devoted volunteer in her
community and church, and a grandmother and great grandmother who
would get down on her knees to play.
Laurencia and Clarence moved to Shannex in Quispamsis in
their later years so that they could be together. There she enjoyed an
independent life and made many friends among the residents and staff.
Her heart never left Grand Falls but she knew that this move was for
the best. As always, she was a good neighbour, a true friend and happy
to contribute a cookie, a smile or a kind word wherever she could. The
challenging loss of her vision due to macular degeneration did not
diminish Laurencia’s determination to live an active and
full life and it was easy to forget that her vision was
limited.
Her family chooses not to mourn too long but rather to
remember fondly her extraordinary life of service to others, her
absolute commitment to her family and her boundless energy. Those
wishing to do the same are invited to contribute to charitable causes
reflecting these values (such as Bobby’s Hospice in Saint
John where she spent her final days) or merely to talk to someone who
needs a kind word… Laurencia would have appreciated
that.
In accordance with her wishes, there will be a private
internment at a later date.
