In his 85th year, Richard L. Jenkins, of New Maryland, New
Brunswick passed away on December 4, 2023, peacefully at home after a
relentless battle with pulmonary fibrosis.
Born in Everett, NB on April 9, 1938, he was the son of the
late Betsy (Paget) and Winfield Jenkins. During his childhood in rural
New Brunswick, Richard earned a reputation as a rascal, especially in
the one-room schoolhouse where he could be found stacking wood that he
purposefully knocked over just so he would not have to attend class.
One of his favorite stories to tell was how he would holler
“Catch me!” and then jump from the top of the stairs which
would send every adult in the house running to his rescue. His
shenanigans followed him to Ontario where he met the love of his life
in 1955, Nancy Richardson.
He was a devoted husband and father, never missing a beat (or
sports practice/game/tournament), his family always came first. He
enjoyed snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, and kicking back with a beer
on the deck at Bear Island. His arm was broken twice while building
his dream “camp” – once falling off the roof and the other
from his dog, Rex, pulling him off the stairs in pursuit of a
squirrel. His dedication to creating a family and friends hang-out
never faltered. He provided hours of fun for the “kids”
while driving the boat as they tubed and skied, never asking
for anything in return. He successfully taught two generations of kids
to drive – his patience never
wavered.
Throughout his life, Richard worked as a woodsman, mover, and
truck driver, both locally and long-haul. After settling in New
Maryland, he worked as a welder for the City of Fredericton (Northside
depot), where he retired in 2000. He easily made friends wherever he
went with his loyalty, honesty, and cheeky sense of humor. His uncanny
ability to figure out anything made him a mentor to all who needed
help. The people who were lucky enough to have known him will miss his
‘cat that ate the canary’ grin and quick wit.
Richard leaves behind his loving wife of 61 years, Nancy
(Richarson), his son, Ron Jenkins (Isabel) of Rusagonis, NB, and his
daughter Susan Mountan (Bill) of Nasonworth, NB. Five
delightful grandchildren, Sam Su (Adam), Isaac Mountan, Toby
Su (Ashley), Sam Mountan, Will Mountan, and one great-grandson, who
was the beer to his potato chips, and the apple of his eye, Jasper
Mountan. In addition, his dear Aunt Margaret, of Alberta, as
well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was
pre-deceased by his parents, stepfather (Harold Jenkins), brother
(Malcolm Jenkins), sister (Wilma Parish), and his two canine
companions, Kodi and Rex.
The family would like to thank Dr. Brittnay Gillis, Dr.
Stephanie Frenette, Extra-Mural, Ambulance Services, the RCMP and
Chris McQuade of Bishop’s Funeral Home for their compassion
and care.
Cremation has taken place. At Richard’s request,
there will be no visitation or service. In lieu of flowers, donations
to the Oromocto SPCA would be appreciated by the
family.

Those who touch our lives, stay in our hearts forever.
