Patricia “Pat” Marilyn McGivney passed away on Thursday, November 28, 2024 surrounded by her family. Born on June 5, 1941, she was the daughter of Silbert and Mary (Goddard) Preston .
With six siblings scattered across Canada , some of Mom’s happiest moments were occasions when they returned home for summer vacations. In addition to her immediate family, Mom was forever grateful to have married into the McGivney clan whose ongoing love and support was felt throughout her life.
Having lived in her house for 62 years, she was part of a close and supportive neighbourhood. Her home was always open for family and friends to share meals, stories, a game of cards and many good laughs. While she counted herself fortunate to have numerous lifelong friends, the love, support and generosity she received from Jean Whitehead was unwavering. After losing her loving husband Mac at a young age, Mom courageously marched forward without Dad’s steadying demeanor by her side. Several years later, Mom was happy to find a new life partner, Scott Hamilton with whom she shared many years of adventures. Of particular note was their time spent travelling throughout Canada and the US in their RV, eventually wintering in Florida . It was there that they discovered a new community of friends with whom they formed close bonds.
Mom enjoyed her working career with the Bank of Montreal and the Federal Government. After retiring at the age of 54, she devoted her remaining years as a full time grandmother, part time volunteer and traveler. Her greatest joy in life was her family. The mere mention of her grandsons’ names had her bursting with pride and she always made them feel special, loved and listened to. Her home was their second home. As a loving and supportive Mother/Nan, she spent many weekends cheering (boisterously) from the sidelines of all her “boys” sporting events. Margaret was the daughter she never had and both felt so blessed for the special relationship they shared.
Mom’s passing will leave a profound void in the hearts of many, including her son Rick, daughter-in-law Margaret and grandchildren Will (Maggie) and Matthew (Chantal). She was predeceased by her husband Malcolm (1987) and most recently her long time partner Scott Hamilton. She was also predeceased by her sisters Shirley MacFawn (Russell), Betty Boutaught (Bernie), June McEachern (Bud), and brother Sib Preston (Marlene). She is survived by two brothers Bob Preston (Joanne) and Bill Preston (Armelle) as well as her sister-in-laws Lorraine Fullerton (Paul), Bonnie Waugh (Ben) and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive , Fredericton NB on Tuesday, December 10, 2024 from 2-4 pm. A private family service will be held at a later date. As a long time volunteer and later beneficiary of Meals on Wheels, remembrances may be made to this organization or other charity of the donor’s choice. Personal condolences may be offered through www.yorkfh.com
