Obituary of Patricia Eleanor Stewart
Patricia Eleanor Stewart
1947 – 2024
On July 18, 2024 the death of Patricia Eleanor (Jones) Stewart, wife of Dr. John Benjamin Stewart occurred at the York Care Centre in Fredericton, New Brunswick. She was 77 years of age and had been in declining health for several years.
Pat was predeceased by parents Raymond and Eleanor (Barlass) Jones, and her infant sister Linda Jones. She will be greatly missed by her husband John of Fredericton, NB, and her daughters Elizabeth (Beth) Hatchard (Derek) of Fredericton NB and Heather Stewart (Kaitlyn McCarthy) of New Maryland, NB; her grandchildren Emery Hatchard, Hannah Hatchard, Kiera Hatchard, Cricket Lange, Bridget Lange and Charlotte Lange; her sister Sue Morrell (Rick) and brothers Don Jones (Yvette) and Alan Jones all of Ontario; her relatives in both the Jones and Stewart families, and her friends.
Born in Toronto, Ontario, the family eventually moved to Guelph and upon graduation from high school, she enrolled in the Dental Hygiene program at the University of Toronto. After working in public health in Ontario, she moved to Atlantic Canada where she completed a program in Expanded Duties in Dental Hygiene at Dalhousie University. Upon completion of this program, she took a job doing restorative dentistry in Summerside PEI, where she met her husband John and was married in 1972. After the birth of their children, Pat chose to work part-time and be at home looking after her family. In 1990, she and her family moved to Fredericton, New Brunswick where she continued her work in Dental Hygiene until retirement.
Pat engaged in church work both in Summerside and in Fredericton. More recently, she was an active member of the WMS group at Brunswick Street Baptist Church, the Deacons’ Board, Bible study groups, sewing for children in Venezuela, short-term mission trips to Rwanda and India, and a faithful attender at Sunday school and Sunday worship services. She was a helper. She volunteered regularly to collect for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, taught literacy to newcomers for Laubach Literacy, and at the Salvation Army Kettles at Christmas time. She prepared food for needy families, helped to set up and serve at Dental Hygiene events during Oral Health Month and at functions in the community and at her church. She loved to travel and enjoyed visiting countries in Western and Eastern Europe, countries around the Mediterranean Sea and in the Caribbean. She particularly enjoyed traveling by cruise ship. As well, she was an avid reader, enjoyed walking with friends, attending aqua fit classes, sewing and making quilts for family members and her grandchildren. She loved cats, particularly Spike. She was a devoted mother and grandmother who cared deeply for her family offering a warm hand to hold, supporting many endeavours, and cheering in the stands.
The family would like to thank the staff, nurses and other health care professionals at York Care Centre for their warm and caring services offered to Pat. Additionally we want to thank the friends who visited her regularly.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Brunswick Street Baptist Church July 23, 2024 at 2pm with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada, York Care Foundation Inc. or to a charity of choice.
