It is with heavy
hearts and profound sadness that the family of Pamela Lynn (Orser)
Harvey announce her peaceful passing at Hospice House on Monday,
December 4, 2023. She was surrounded by love as she embarked on her
next journey to officially receive her angel
wings.
Pam was born in
Halifax on October 6, 1950 to Dr. Gerald and Pauline Orser. She was
the second of four children and described herself as spontaneous and
devilish who kept her parents very busy as a child. In her early
years, she lived in Woodstock before her family relocated to
Fredericton in 1962 when she was in Junior High School. Throughout
high school, she was very involved in many extracurricular activities.
She was a lifeguard at the Y, on the ski patrol at Crabbe Mountain,
the cheer captain and yearbook editor at Fredericton High School.
After high school, Pam went on to pursue post-secondary studies at UNB
and St. Thomas University earning Bachelor degrees in Arts and
Education, as well as a Masters degree in Guidance and Couselling. In
her adult life, she was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority since
1976.
It was during her
high school days that she met her husband, Scottie, and the young
couple wed when Pam was just 19 years old. Together they built a life
of love! Pam’s greatest joy was being a Mom to her three
children, Shanyn, Rob and Erin and years later a Nana to her beloved
grandchildren, Brynn, Nate, Jack, Bode, Londyn, Cam, Easton and
Andie.
A go-getter and
action oriented individual she kept us all organized and well taken
care of. She consistently put everyone’s needs above her own
and demonstrated genuine selflessness and endless patience.
Pam’s circle was expansive and she cherished the
relationships that she had with others. She exuded kindness and
compassion leaving everyone she encountered feeling seen and heard –
like they were the most important person in the world. She truly saw
the best in everyone and said “life becomes easier and more
beautiful when we can see the good in other
people”.
These wonderful
personal attributes also served her well in her professional life as
public school teacher. Over the course of her career, she taught at
George Street Junior High School and Nashwaaksis Junior High/Middle
School and held positions as a classroom teacher, Resource Teacher and
Guidance Counsellor. She also spent several summers teaching and
administrating the middle level summer school program. Quite often
family members have been told “Mrs. Harvey was my favorite
teacher”, which really doesn’t come as a surprise to
any of us. Pam retired from teaching in 2006 yet went on to a second
career in 2010 as an international student homestay coordinator first
with Canada Homestay International and then Atlantic Education
International. In this role, she matched international students with
local host families and supported them during their time attending
school in Fredericton. She and Scottie were homestay parents for
several students. They formed many wonderful relationships – the most
significant with their Chinese “daughters”, Sunny and Vicky,
who lived with them for 4 years. Pam officially retired in February
2023.
Like she lived her
life, her journey with cancer was no different. She defied odds, and
crushed personal goals all while displaying incredible strength,
courage, and gratitude. Often, she would remark that everyday was a
blessing and she found something to be grateful for despite the
circumstances. Her positive and optimistic mindset has been such an
inspiration to everyone who has been lucky enough to have crossed her
path. Always a bright light even in the darkest of
days!
Mourning the loss of
her physical presence is her husband of 53 years, Scott Jr; her
children and their spouses, Shanyn and Shawn Small, Rob and Sara
Harvey, and Erin and Brad Mahar; her cherished grandchildren, Brynn
and Nate Small, Bode, Cam and Andie Harvey, Londyn and Easton Mahar;
her sisters Tanya Orser and Shelly Delbridge (Lowell Simpson);
sister-in law Jane (Rick) Hansen; and her Chinese
“daughters” Sunny Wang and Vicky Chu, as well as several
nieces, nephews and countless friends. She was predeceased by her
parents; her brother Greg and his wife Cheryl; brother-in-law Rick
Delbridge; her father and mother in law, Scott Sr. and Joan Harvey;
and her grandson Jack
Harvey.
Pam’s
family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the
entire staff of Hospice House for providing her (and all of us) with
exceptional care and compassion in her final days. We were so
comforted knowing that she was being incredibly well cared for.
Gratitude is also extended to her family physician, Dr Jeff Barton,
who she came to think of as a friend; the staff at the Extramural
Program; the palliative care team; and our dear family friend, Carol
Malloy, who has been a constant and calming presence for us all over
the past several months.
At her request, there
will be no visitation or funeral service. In keeping with her generous
nature, her family asks that you do something kind for someone else to
brighten their day. Those who wish to make a charitable donation in
her memory, please consider Hospice House Fredericton or The Brendan
Oreto Foundation- two local organizations that were dear to her
heart.
