Gerald Norman “Norm” Sheen, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and veteran, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at the Dr Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital in Fredericton. He was 85 years young.
Born in Pictou, Nova Scotia, on January 29, 1939, to Roland and Evelyn Sheen (nee McNeill) of Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Norm’s life was a testament to service, love and adventure. At 18, he embarked on a journey that would shape his entire life, joining the Royal Canadian Air Force. For 34 years, Norm proudly served his country as an Air Defence Technician, his career taking him and his family across Canada and even to Montana, USA. His dedication and expertise earned him the rank of Master Warrant Officer by the time he retired from CFB Gagetown.
Norm’s greatest adventure began in the early 1960s when he met the love of his life, Carol Batt. Their military backgrounds brought them together, and their love kept them united for more than 62 years. This past August, they celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary, a testament to their enduring partnership.
Norm’s legacy lives on through his children, Dave Sheen of Caledon, Ontario, Judy Sheen of Woodstock, NB and Krista Wong of Fredericton; his adoring grandchildren, Jordan Hutton, Jack Sheen and Addisyn Sheen. He took great pride in his family, cherishing every moment spent with them over the years, most often at their cottage near Pugwash, Nova Scotia.
A man of many interests, Norm found joy in RV travels with Carol and their close friends, his involvement with the Masonic Lodge and Shriners and his membership in the Royal Canadian Legion and Wilmot United Church. In recent years, he was an avid fan of the University of New Brunswick Reds. At the games you could find Norm gathered with his friends between periods.
After retiring from the RCAF, he embarked on a successful second career in real estate, helping countless families find their homes in the Fredericton area.
Norm’s warm smile, quick wit, generous and gentle spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of service, love, and community involvement that will continue to inspire for generations to come.
As we bid farewell to Norm, we celebrate a life well-lived and a man well-loved. His memory will forever be a blessing to his wife Carol, his brother David, his children and grandchildren and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brooksie Drive, Fredericton on Thursday, October 10, 2024 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. A Memorial Service will be held from Wilmot United Church on Friday, October 11, 2024, at 2 pm with Rev. Mary Tingley officiating. Members of the Masonic Lodges will be assembling in the church at 1:30 pm to prepare for a Memorial Tribute Service. For those who wish, remembrances can be made to Wilmot United Church or the Shriners’ Transportation Fund in honour of Norm’s devotion and dedication to these organizations.
