Obituary of Donald Charles DeMerchant
It is with heartfelt sadness that the Family of Donald Charles DeMerchant announce his passing on April 16, 2024, at the age of 87 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton, NB.
Don was born in Upper Kintore, Scotch Colony, New Brunswick, on December 24, 1936. He was the son of the late William and Elizabeth DeMerchant. Don grew up on the family’s farm in Hillandale and attended school in nearby Andover, NB.
He is survived by children Bill (Betsy), Paul (June), Peter (Sandra) and his grandchildren Theresa (Kevin Fraser) Taylor-Fraser, Brian DeMerchant, Katelyn (William) MacMackin, Laura (Samuel) Renault, Robert (Marissa DiCarlo) DeMerchant, Bailey DeMerchant and great grandchildren Anya Taylor, William Fraser, Eliza and Audrey MacMackin and Olivia and Charlie Renault. Three siblings; brothers Warren & Blair DeMerchant and sister Anne (Steve) Thompson and sister-in-law Fern McCoy.
Don was predeceased by the love of his life Liz (2021) to whom he was married for 59 wonderful years. Also predeceased by brother Richard (Dick) and sister Florence (Doll).
Don was a proud graduate of UNB Civil Engineering class of 1962. He started his career with the New Brunswick Department of Highways, working there for 11 years before deciding to take a risk and purchase a Fredericton-based construction company; Caldwell and Ross Limited. Don used his knowledge, “true grit” and determination to grow C&R; considered to be one of the leading bridge, wharf, and road construction companies in New Brunswick. He was a Professional Engineer, Past President and Honorary Life Member of the New Brunswick Road Builders Association. Don left his mark on the infrastructure throughout our Province. Amazingly, he was instrumental in constructing well over a hundred structures and kilometers of roads. He was truly passionate about his work and enjoyed the people and the challenges along the way.
Together, Don and Liz loved spending time with family and friends at their camp in Juniper and for many years at their winter home in Florida. Don was an avid golfer and a longstanding member of the Fredericton Golf Club as well as enjoying the comradery of hunting and fishing. He was a proud man and committed to providing for his family and those he loved. In later years he looked forward to Sunday suppers with family and especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family extends a special thank you to the kindness and compassionate care given by the staff of Parkland (Shannex), Brunswick Hall and the DECH.
A Celebration of Life will be held in the Bobak Room at the Delta Hotel in Fredericton from 3:00 – 5:00 pm on Saturday, May 4, 2024. There will be a private family interment in the Fredericton Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations to Hospice Fredericton, the Alzheimer Society of NB or a charity of your choice is appreciated.
