The sudden passing of Dimitrios “Takhe” Eliakis, husband of Deborah Anne (Boone) Eliakis of Beaver Dam, NB, occurred on Tuesday, February 13, 2024 at his home. Born on August 10, 1955 in Galatas, Crete, Greece, he was the son of the late Ioannis and Stamatia (Papastavrou) Eliakis.
Dimitrios began his working life in his teens, starting out as a baker, then a housepainter, soldier, then housepainter again. He worked at York Steel upon immigrating to Canada in 1979, then started a house painting business of his own. He opened Pano’s Souvlaki & Donair on Regent St in 1991 and a second location on Union St in 1998 and was a fixture at the Boyce Farmer’s Market most Saturdays.
He loved hunting and fishing (in later years more often with his camera) and spending time in nature. Since retiring, he racked up many kilometres on the backroads of rural New Brunswick. He enjoyed tinkering in his garage and trying to fix things himself. He loved animals, especially cats, and will be missed by his fur-babies Missy and Shadow.
He went by many names – Dimitrios, Dimitri, Jimmy, Jim, Takhe, Thio/Uncle, friend…and most importantly, “Baba” (“Dad” in Greek) – but whatever you called him, he’d be there for you.
In addition to his loving wife of 44 years, Dimitrios is survived by his daughter, Stamatia Baker (Christopher); son, Pano Eliakis; sister, Rena Matsama; brother, Theo Eliakis (Nancy); sister-in-law, Debbie (Brooks) Eliakis; several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, one great-great-nephew, and many cousins.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Elias “Louis” Eliakis, and his infant sister, Eleni.
Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, NB on Sunday, February 18, 2024 from 3-6 pm. A Funeral Service will be held at York Funeral Home’s T. Gordon MacLeod Memorial Chapel, Monday, February 19, 2024 at 2 pm with Father Matthew Penny officiating. Interment will be in Dayton Cemetery, at a later date. For those who wish, remembrances can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, any SPCA, or any other charity. Personal condolences may be offered through www.yorkfh.com
