Héléne Manuel Obituary
It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden yet peaceful passing of M J Hélène Manuel at her home in Bathurst, on December 9, 2024, at the age of 75. Born to the late Leo and Yvonne (Cormier) Quinn of Bathurst, NB, Hélène was a cherished daughter, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.
Hélène will be deeply missed by her two sons, Keith (Jennifer) of Halifax and Craig (Serenia) of Vancouver, her daughter Natalie (Lonnie) Wright of Bathurst, and her two beloved granddaughters, Emily (“Sweetheart”) and Alyssa (“Honeybun”) of Halifax, who brought immense joy to her life.
Her siblings will also mourn her passing: George (Josie) of Montreal, Anna of Moncton, Elizabeth (Robert Brady) of Moncton, Arthur (Hilda) of Shediac, and Bob (Laura) of Shediac. Hélène leaves behind many members of the Manuel family across Newfoundland and Labrador, including Ruby (Phil) Michelin, Roy (Helen), Pearce (Josephine), Bessie (Ray) Humby, Violet (Paul Blake), Geraldine (Colin) Hoskins, Juanita (Boyd) Pilgrim, and Camella (Tony) Andrews. She will also be lovingly remembered by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends from across Canada and the US.
Hélène was predeceased by her devoted husband, Don Manuel (2001), her granddaughter Jessica (2008), and her beloved brother Johnny Quinn (2015).
Hélène and Don’s love story began in the early 1970s when she worked as a clerk at the T. Eaton’s Catalogue office in Bathurst and Don was employed at Scotiabank nearby. They married in 1973 and began a family in Woodstock, NB, welcoming their first son, Keith, in 1974. Their journey then took them to Saint John, NB, where they expanded their family with the births of Craig in 1977 and Natalie in 1979. As Don’s career advanced, the family relocated to Miramichi (Newcastle) and Jacquet River, where Hélène devoted herself to raising their children as a stay-at-home mom. With each move, they fostered lasting friendships across the province. After Don’s passing in 2001, Hélène returned to her hometown of Bathurst, where she spent her remaining years surrounded by family and friends.
After her children were grown, Hélène proudly re-entered the workforce, finding fulfillment in her role as a salesperson at Northern Reflections, where she formed lasting connections with others. Following the store’s closure, she dedicated her time to sewing, crafting, and enjoying playing games on her iPad with friends near and far and keeping in touch with friends through social media.
In her later years, Hélène discovered a passion for travel, exploring destinations across Cuba, Mexico, the United States, and Europe. A devoted fan of Elvis Presley, she fulfilled a lifelong dream by visiting Graceland, the legendary home of her all-time favorite singer. Her admiration for Elvis was well-known among friends and family, and her home was a testament to her devotion, filled with Elvis memorabilia. Her love for the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll was so profound that when pre-arranging her headstone, she ensured it featured a photo of Elvis and the title of her favorite song, “Return to Sender”, etched on the back—a heartfelt and lasting tribute.
In 2018, Hélène achieved another lifelong dream by traveling to the charming town of Saint-Malo, France, with her eldest son Keith. There, she reconnected with distant Cuguen relatives at the ancestral home of her great-grandfather, Jean-Pierre Cuguen (later anglicized to John P. Quinn). Their journey also included tours of France, Italy, and Ireland, with unforgettable moments such as visiting the Eiffel Tower, paying respects at the grave of her great-uncle John Edward Quinn, who died in World War I, exploring Mont Saint-Michel, the Vatican, and the Cliffs of Moher.
As per Hélène’s wishes, there will be no visitation, service, or mass. Cremation has taken place, and a burial will be held next year at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Cemetery in East Bathurst, where she will rest in peace with her family. At her farewell, her favorite Elvis Presley songs will be played to honor her memory.
Arrangements are entrusted to MacMillan’s Funeral Home, Black Point, NB. The family invites you to sign an online book of condolences at www.macmillansfuneralhome.ca. Charitable donations in Hélène’s memory may be made to the IWK Hospital in Halifax, Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada, the Canadian Cancer Society, or your local SPCA.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of sympathy through calls, emails, texts, and messages on social media.
