Susan Wong Lee
June 20, 1931 – May 21, 2024
Remembered with Love
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Susan Wong Lee (李甄素琴). Her passing was peaceful at home on May 21, 2024.
Susan was an energetic age 92 and fought a brave fight against a recently diagnosed heart condition.
Susan was pre-deceased by her husband Bing in 2022. Susan will be missed greatly and lovingly remembered by her sons Grant (Susanna) and Victor, grandchildren Vincent (Kandis) and Victoria (George), great-grandchildren Edward and Amy, and many family and friends, including brother Dennis (Sandra), sister-in-law Molly (Kal), relatives Saul and Julian, nephews, nieces and more.
Susan was born in Toe Goot Haung village in Hoy San county in China (草骨坑村). She was a kind, caring, and compassionate person that provided for and loved her family with all her heart.
Susan moved to Winnipeg in 1951. Like her father and grandfather before her, Susan became a very well-respected restaurateur and with her husband Bing was a trailblazer for Chinese food in Winnipeg.
In 1964, Susan and Bing bought a place and opened Bing’s Chinese Food restaurant. Starting with a small kitchen, a lunch counter and a few tables seating a total of 30 people, along with pick-up and delivery services, they soon had many devoted and regular customers. In 1974, Susan and Bing decided to tear down the old building and re-build on the same spot. The result was a brand-new restaurant building with a large kitchen and a licensed dining room still serving all the customer favourites.
During this time, Susan and Bing were very busy taking care of their sons. Susan regularly took the sons on bus trips so that they could visit different parts of the city. Roast beef on Saturdays at Eaton’s and then a stop at the pastry counter there for lemon tarts and apple tarts were favourite trips for her sons. Susan also took her sons on bus trips across Canada and the U.S. so that they could visit new places and see friends and family.
Later on, Susan and Bing loved taking care of their grandkids seeing them almost every day. She loved playing with them and cooking for them and teaching them new things. They would take the grandkids shopping and to parks and to many fun places in the mornings and afternoons and then bring the grandkids with them to open the restaurant for the evening.
After many years of hard work, Susan and Bing retired from the restaurant in 1994. Before retiring, they invited many friends and loyal customers to get together at the restaurant for one more big banquet of their favourite dishes.
Susan had a happy, healthy and active retirement. In retirement, she would take long walks with neighbours and would go to Seniors Fitness classes three times a week with friends. Even in her 90s she was doing Seniors Zumba online and could walk for an hour non-stop. (We would tell Mom to take a break but she was full of energy and enjoying herself!)
Susan liked cooking for family and watching her favourite soap operas and comedy shows on TV. After retiring, Susan and Bing enjoyed trips to see family and friends across Canada and the U.S. They especially enjoyed getting together in San Francisco, Seattle and Las Vegas with family and long-time good friends of more than 80 years that Susan knew from school days in China. Susan enjoyed learning new things and would regularly play games and talk with family and friends on her iPad.
Susan was most proud of and enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren grow up and prosper. She especially loved her great-grandchildren’s visits in person and would talk with them and play with them regularly on video.
Even in her last year, Susan talked about recovering and moving closer to family in the future. She always asked how we were doing and told us not to worry about her. Her love and caring was strongly felt and cherished. Our Mom (媽), Grandma (人) and Great-Grandma (白) will always be remembered, loved and deeply missed by her family and by those who knew her.
Special thanks to friends, neighbours, and colleagues for their kind thoughts, prayers and assistance. It has been much appreciated. Also many thanks to the doctors and healthcare team members for your treatment and kindness.
Susan’s wishes were to have a simple service with family only in attendance. The service will be on Thursday, May 30, 2024 at 1:00 PM CT. Friends and out-of-town family may watch a livestream at that time. The family will provide the link on request.
