Rose Elisabeth Majcher (nee Sadowski)
It is with profound sadness that our family announces the sudden passing of Rose Elisabeth Majcher (nee Sadowski) on Dec.14th after a brief illness surrounded by her loving family at the age of 83.
Rose will be dearly missed by her husband of 52 years Leon, her sons Myron (Kathy), and Miles (Erin) as well as her beloved Grandchildren who meant the world to her Landon, Bailey, Connor, Marcus and Rhea. She is survived by her two siblings brother Bernie Sadowski and sister Anne Donnelley and remembered fondly by her many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Jacob Prawdzik and Mary Sadowski and her nephew Michael Sadowski.
Rose was born into a tough and hard post-depression farm life on November 20, 1941 in Polonia, Manitoba but it would be a place she would hold dear to heart and remained a refuge that she returned to for the rest of her life. Her devout Catholic faith was formed at an early age by the upbringing of her late mother Mary and further rooted during the formative years of grade school and catechism taught by the nuns who resided a stone’s throw from the family home. Having been immersed in the routines of farm life, Rose always had a kind heart towards animals and was always willing to play and cuddle with family pets even into her later years.
Upon finishing schooling, Rose transitioned to the ‘Big City Life’ in Winnipeg where she moved in with her brother Bernie Sadowski and his family. Family was always a focal point of her life and she held family members dear to her heart and was always eager to spend as much time as possible with family and making frequent trips back to the homestead to see her mom. Rose held several jobs during her early days in Winnipeg which included working at Christie Biscuit Factory on Notre Dame Ave., helping as a babysitter/nanny for her nephews and niece before settling into working for the AWA All Star Wrestling Box Office under Al Tomko where she would rub elbows with legendary grapplers such as Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant and hometown boy ‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper.
While renting a room in Winnipeg’s Wolseley area, she would eventually meet, begin dating and eventually marry her husband, Leon Majcher on April 26th, 1972 at St.Elizabeth of Hungary Church back in her hometown of Polonia. Soon afterwards they began to grow their family with the birth of their first son – Myron and again with their second son – Miles in 1980. By that time Rose had settled into becoming the full-time matriarch of the Majcher family and continue to spend as much time as possible out in Polonia with Rose enjoying time with her mom (Mary), helping her with the extensive vegetable garden and other yardwork. Occasional outings to Minnedosa Beach or camping at Riding Mountain National Park were also highlights of busy summer months.
Rose practiced her faith with vocations to the family’s home parish of Blessed John XXIII: volunteering with the ladies group who looked after preparing food for Funerals, cleaning of the Chapel and sacristy, making Banners for the various seasonal Liturgical Celebrations and volunteering as a Eucharistic Minister for many years. Even when the family took vacations every attempt was made to locate and attend the nearest Catholic Church for Sunday Mass – church was a big part of her and her family’s life and it was extremely rare that a Sunday Mass would ever be missed and even then usually with much chastisement from mom.
Rose always kept herself busy and could be seen walking an almost daily route to the various grocery and clothing stores and to Unicity Mall (for many years with a child or two in tow) to keep her family clothed, fed and funded as well as ensure everyone had their Birthday and Christmas Gifts. “Rosie” or “GO-GO Rosie” as she was often teased with by family members also found the time to keep active bowling in a Ladies 5 Pin Bowling League, curling and enjoying her favorite hobby (gardening) in her and dad’s garden and flower patch in Winnipeg. During these years she also made several trips to visit her in-laws (The ‘McCreary Majchers’) and their extended family spread coast to coast including in B.C., Nova Scotia as well as family in Toronto. These were special trips as it brought together family members separated by great distance that didn’t get to see each other very often and were highly anticipated by the boys.
Mom was able to make a few special trips over the years. Being an Elvis devotee she was able to make a pilgrimage to Graceland with her friend Jeanette from back home. She also paid a visit to the Island of Hawaii with dad and his cousin Steve and his wife Lenore Murowski. She also enjoyed going on a family road trip to the Black Hills which was highlighted by taking in an outdoor authentic re-creation of the Passion Play in Spearfish, South Dakota. Never a frequent flyer Rose was somehow coaxed to travel with Leon to tour the highlands and lowlands of Scotland to watch her son Miles perform across the country as a member of a bagpipe band including the World Bagpipe Championships in Glasgow and a ‘Once-in-a-Lifetime’ vacation to the Mayan Riviera courtesy of Dad’s 40 Years of service with MTS.
On top of gardening Rose also enjoyed cooking and baking. It was rare that there wasn’t some type of pie or desert after a meal. Family time was important to mom and she made sure that everyone sat down together for supper and talk about their day, whether it was with regards to dad’s work, the kids school, sporting activities or upcoming events. Rose always made sure no one ever left the supper table hungry or without finishing their plate; a trait that was likely engrained by her mother ‘Busha’. Mom ran a tight ship and made sure everyone got to where they had to on time whether it was for school, church, dentist, orthodontics, Doctor appointments, sporting and music activities; she made sure we were never late.
Mom always looked forward to watching her son’s sports and other activities and this would continue on again with her grandkids – whether it was hockey games, baseball, soccer, music/piano lessons, dance recitals and concerts mom almost never missed an event or game. She was our biggest (albeit nervous) Cheerleader especially in the times she had to walk away when the game became “too much” though she would continue to peek around the corner to see if we held on to a win or came back to win.
Another family-centric activity was Rose’s annual Boxing Day Bash where she would invite all her siblings and their spouses, nieces, nephews, and their wives, husbands and kids over for a feast which as the family grew amassed to upwards of 40 people in the basement of the family home with no dishwasher to help with the aftermath. She loved to entertain family and friends especially around Christmas and New Year’s Season and she did so for what seemed decades.
Upon dad’s retirement, the two embarked on numerous bus trips together touring through various parts of the US including some highlight adventures in Nashville, Memphis, New Orleans, San Francisco, Yellowstone, Branson, Deadwood, the Dakotas and Minnesota over the years. These trips offered both of them a chance to make new friends, look for ‘shopping deals’, try their hand at ‘lady luck’, take in some sites, concerts and excursions as well as re-acquaint with some old but familiar faces. Mom also had her rituals and would routinely go to her local Watering hole (McDonald’s, Tim Horton’s) to meet up with friends to chat and catch up on the latest gossip over a cup of coffee or two.
Mom’s was so ecstatic when her Grandchildren began to enter the picture. She adored them and could never see them enough or spend enough time with them. She looked forward to every chance to be with them and her and dad were a great help whenever called upon to re-open ‘Grandma and Grandpa’ Daycare Services. But to mom it was never a chore it was done out of simple, never-ending, and unconditional love. She would do anything and everything for her family especially her grandkids.
Right to the end, Rose always displayed an un-imaginable amount of energy and endurance and has likely accumulated more mileage on her feet than most worn-out vehicles. Her nieces and nephews held mom in high esteem and marveled at how she could maintain the homestead and also provide all of us such a Happy Lifetime of memories to cherish all our days. ‘Rose’, ‘Rosie’, Gramma, Auntie, mom we will miss you but take comfort in knowing that one day we will see you again. It is time now to rest Rose you have earned your peace. May God welcome you and walk with you through heaven’s gates. This is not goodbye but simply turning of a page into another chapter. We will Love you always and forever, your family.
In celebration of the incredible life, love and memories Rose imparted to her friends and family members a ‘Celebration of Life’ service is planned for 2 PM on Thursday December 19th at St Charles Roman Catholic Church (320 St. Charles Street, Winnipeg). Honorary Pallbearers are Dawson Braun, Dylan Braun, James Donnelly, Travis McGinnis, Sabrina Sadowski and Terry Sadowski.
A special thanks to all the staff at the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg for the loving and professional care and compassion provided to Rose and her family throughout mom’s brief hospital stay. Your care and attentiveness to all our family’s needs and requests lightened the heavy burden as we said our goodbyes.
As much as Rose enjoyed gardening and planting flowers the family humbly and gratefully requests that in lieu of flowers and other tributes donations to the HSCs SICU be made in Rose’s name to honor her devotion to caring for all of her much-loved family and friends.
