Richard Douglas Cruickshank
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Richard Douglas Cruickshank at his home on Monday, November 11, 2024, at the age of sixty-eight.
Rick was born on May 9, 1956, in Owen Sound, Ontario, to Jean and Douglas Cruickshank, who predeceased him. He grew up as the eldest of four children, soon joined by sisters Paula and Lynn (Frank) and brother Barry (Mary), and quickly learned the joys—and occasional challenges—of sharing his life with siblings.
In 1974, Rick married Margaret Penner, and together they built a life. They had two children, Angela, and Jason, and made their home first in the west end, then in Charleswood, where they raised their family. Rick worked in various roles over the years, with his early career in security supporting his young family. Later in life, he returned to school and completed his 5th Power Engineer course, leading to a fulfilling second career in the hotel industry.
After Rick and Margaret went their separate ways in 2000, Rick found new love with Debbie Anderson, whom he married in 2015. Together, they created a blended family. Rick was proud to embrace his role as stepfather to Debbie’s three children—Jason, Devon, and Justin—and he loved them as his own.
Rick dedicated countless hours to coaching and supporting his stepchildren in football, and he took immense joy in attending his grandchildren Andrew, Jenna, and Matthew’s sporting events. He was always there with words of encouragement and a steady presence, offering support to all who needed it.
Rick is survived by his wife, Debbie, his children Angela (Geoff) and Jason, his stepchildren Jason, Devon (Emily), and Justin, and his cherished grandchildren Andrew, Jenna, and Matthew. He also leaves behind his nephews Alex and Blake, their families and many extended family members and friends, all of whom will miss him dearly.
Rick’s love for his family and to those he cared about will be remembered always. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A private family celebration of Rick’s life will take place in the coming weeks.
