Mary Holewka Obituary
Mary Holewka
Nee: Storozuk
The family of Mary Holewka wishes to announce the peaceful passing of their beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother at The Maples Personal Care Home in Winnipeg on Sunday, January 21, 2024, at the age of 97 years, 5 months, 10 days.
Maria Storozuk was born on August 11, 1926, in Rogers, Manitoba, near Oakburn to her parents Fred and Jaga Storozuk, nee Kempinski. She was baptized and confirmed in infancy on August 16, 1926, at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Church in Dolyny, Manitoba. Mom’s early years were spent living with her family in this rural area. She told us that her mom died when she was 11 years old, and by the time she was into her teen years she decided to move to Winnipeg, to find work, and be nearer to her older sisters who had preceded her. Mom adapted to this new life and her experiences helped her grow into a resourceful and independent young woman. She met Paul Holewka while they were both working at Atlas Brush, and their mutual admiration and friendship blossomed into a lifelong commitment. They were married on October 19, 1946, in St. Vladimir and Olga Church by the Rev. Fr. B. Kushnir. They were blessed with two children, Jo-Ann Marie and Basil Paul. Mom continued to develop her skill set and found employment over the years as a seamstress, and in catering, often alongside her sister. She especially enjoyed the catering and the camaraderie with her sister, Sonja, and their good friend, Beatrice. She was the Master of Design for many a head table at weddings and events, draping and pinning fabrics like taffeta, lace, and tulle and adding mini light accents. On the home front, Mom shared these skills by designing, sewing, and installing carefully pleated and layered drapery for all the family‘s picture windows, tailored suits, and handcrafted figures for the Christmas nativity scenes, Santa and Mrs. Claus dolls, Christmas elves, angels, handcrafted dolls with sculpted faces, dimpled hands, knees and feet, hand painted life-like twinkly eyes with pupils and irises, dinosaurs and ewoks. She was a wonderful cook and made delicious beet borscht. These perogies were even fridge-packed and sent by air to her grandchildren attending university in Toronto, cabbage rolls, and all the favourite dishes for a Ukrainian Christmas or Easter feast. She was a strong, humble, generous loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother with boundless energy to look after the children and grandchildren even when it was a challenge…living her life and setting a good example for all of us.
Mom was predeceased by a little brother in his early childhood, her parents, her husband Paul, and her sisters Rose Smith, Kathleen Parker, and Sonja Baluk. Left to mourn her passing are her daughter, Jo-Ann Skakun (Walter), and son Basil Holewka (Marlene), grandchildren Wally Skakun (Karen) Dan Skakun (Stephanie) Kathy Romaniuk (Sam) Jennifer Holewka and Michael Holewka, and great-grandchildren Yelena, Tessa, Xavier, Eric, William, Kristen, Martian, Evan, and Jada.
In later years, Mom experienced progressive memory loss and lived for the past 10 years as a resident at The Maples Personal Care Home in Winnipeg, where she received kind and compassionate care from a team of dedicated caregivers. For this, we are very thankful.
Mom / Baba…we will remember you forever with gratitude and love. May God grant you Eternal Rest with Dad / Gigi.
A funeral service for Mary Holewka will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba…with Rev. Fr. Ihor Shved from St. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral officiating, son-in-law Walter Skakun serving as Cantor, Pallbearers: grandsons Wally and Dan Skakun and great-grandchildren Eric, William, and Evan Skakun, and Tessa Romaniuk.
