Joanne “Joey” Macdonell Obituary
With sadness, we are sharing the loss of our beloved Sister, Aunt, and Friend, Joanne Macdonell.
Joey was predeceased by her infant siblings Mary Jean and Alexander, her sisters Glenrose Turner and Claire Horsley, and brother Angus Macdonell, as well as her parents, Judge Ambrose Roy Macdonell and Muriel Hortense Leclair. Left to mourn is her sister Ellie, and brother-in-law, Don Kilimnik, who were always very close. There are many nieces and nephews from the Kilimnik, Turner, Horsley and Macdonell clans, and many friends, old and new, who will be missing her.
Joey was born June 25, 1942 and attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart on Westgate. She was a proud graduate of St. Paul’s College and University of Manitoba. She cherished the lifelong friendships she made during her school years. Thoughout her career, she taught high school English in the St. Boniface School Division. Love of English extended to being a passionate and voracious reader who always had great recommendations for the next interesting read.
Joey was a great Aunt to grow up with, always having close relationships with her nieces and nephews. We have fond memories of Joey creating fun and interesting activities for us, like teaching us how to write with our toes, make pulling taffy, or taking us on vacation to Florida. In recent years, she had a lot of joy when she became surrogate grandma to Hailee. Many friends from her early years, through to new neighbours, were very much a part of her life. Winter or summer, Joey would always be found wearing at least one cashmere. She appreciated beauty, design and a quality knit. Joey was an avid supporter of Winnipeg Harvest and a long-time volunteer. She was much loved by all of us and will be fondly remembered for her good company and exceptional kindness and generosity. She was direct, pithy and fiercely independent to the very end and will always be missed.
Cremation has taken place and burial of the ashes at St. Mary’s Cemetery will take place at a later date, along with a private celebration of life. Donations can be made to Winnipeg Harvest.
