Helen Christine Foster
With hearts filled with cherished memories, we bid a warm farewell to Helen Christine Foster who passed away in Winnipeg on March 16, 2024, at age 94. Helen was born in Huntoon, Saskatchewan on September 8, 1929, to JG (Pat) and Edith Patterson. Helen married Mervyn Foster (deceased) on June 4 , 1955. Her legacy of love extends through her children, Hal Foster (deceased survived by wife Laura), Sandra Foster (husband Peter Holle) and Patricia Foster; her grandchildren Micheal Foster (Jaime), Stefanie Foster (Jamey),Jeff Foster (Jaimie), Eric Holle, Kirsten Holle, Samantha Brooks, Owen Brooks and Sebastian Brooks; as well as her six great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
Helen lived her life with zest and was a spark that lit up any room. Helen knew how to experience life. She first flew a plane in her 20s and again when she turned 80. Her father-in-law always bragged when Helen shot the most ducks in their annual fall hunt.
Generous and welcoming, there was always room at the table for family and friends. She was an avid curler and golfer and was the life of the party at bonspiels and club events. Helen loved camping and lake life and delighted in sharing her adventures with her children and eventually her grandchildren. She kept her mind sharp by playing scrabble and always did her daily crosswords with a pen.
At age 79, Helen embarked on a new chapter and moved from her beloved Saskatoon to Winnipeg. There, she learned how to use a computer so she could email and play scrabble online to stay connected with her loved ones across the miles. She also moved her Topcat catamaran and sailed into the next phase of lake life at Barrier Bay, Manitoba.
She loved to travel and experience the world. Her adventurous spirit took her to Europe, Asia and the South Pacific with her friends and daughters. To mark her 80th birthday ‘Gramma Helen’ treated herself to a red Mustang GT convertible enhancing her local exploration with style and flair.
Her intelligence, vibrancy, humour, and joy for life will be lovingly remembered.
We extend our deepest gratitude to the caregivers and staff at Golden West Centennial Lodge for their compassionate support over the past 6 years. In honour of Helen’s memory, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society. A Celebration of Life will be held this summer where we will raise our glasses to a life well-lived.
In the immortal words of Helen herself let’s all share a toast “To us,no finer people.”
