Frieda Janzen Obituary/Eulogy
(July 11th, 1938 – November 21st, 2024)
Celebration of Life – December 9th, 2024
With both sadness and gratitude, Frieda Janzen, a beloved mother, mother-in-law, Oma, sister, and friend passed away on November 21st, 2024, at Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home at the age of 86 years.
Frieda will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by her daughter Sindy and her husband Ron Derksen; grandsons, Kieran Derksen & his wife Lauren Bath, and Luke Derksen and his wife Savanna Derksen.
Frieda is survived by her sister Herta Woelk; brothers-in-law, John Janzen and his wife Helen, Ernie Janzen and his wife Elsie, and Will Janzen and his partner Joy Pond; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Frieda was predeceased by her husband Henry Janzen, in 2004, both parents, stepmother, brother-in-law Isaak Janzen and his wife Annie; brother-in-law Jake Woelk; step siblings, Will, Henry, and John Loewen, and Elizabeth “Ma Henning”.
Frieda’s resting place is with her husband Henry at Green Acres Cemetery, Winnipeg.
Frieda was born on July 11th, 1938, in Osterwick, Ukraine; the second child to her parents Dietrich and Sara Derksen, (nee Heinrichs). Herta Woelk is her older sister.
The early years for her family were hard and difficult. Frieda was 5 years old when her parents and sister left Ukraine and made the long journey to East Germany in October 1943. There, they lived in a refugee camp. As the war came closer to the refugee camp, the family had to flee in January 1945, and they were fortunate and grateful to arrive in West Germany, all the way to East Friesland, Germany. There they lived for 3 good years.
In 1948 Frieda’s family left Germany and went to Paraguay and lived in the Colony called Vollendam for 5 years. In 1953 they left the Colony of Vollendam and went to live in Curitiba, Brazil.
Frieda worked in Curitiba, Brazil for a household; cleaning, doing laundry, cooking, and sometimes working in the family’s ice cream store/shop, while Herta worked in St. Paulo, Brazil. Frieda’s father and mother lived in a village not far from Curitiba.
Frieda’s mother’s health was not good. She suffered from extreme asthma. It was better to live in an area of higher elevation, so Frieda’s father and mother moved to the Colony of Witmarsum, Brazil, an hour from Curitiba, where they lived with a farmer and his family, hoping to build their own home in Witmarsum. Frieda’s father and mother only lived there for a few days, when her mother died on November 12th, 1953.
With the help of Frieda’s dad’s two sisters, Frieda and Herta, and their father, the family was able to immigrate to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada on August 13, 1956, where the sisters and their families lived. When they first arrived the three of them lived with Marichen, one of the sisters and her two daughters. After one week they were able to get their own place and with help, also found work.
On May 25th, 1958, Frieda was baptized upon her confession of faith, in the Sargent Mennonite Church by Reverend Isaak J. Friesen where she became a member. Frieda’s Baptism Verse came from Philippians 4: verse 13.
Frieda met Henry Janzen in Brazil and later met him again in Winnipeg. They got married on July 8th, 1961. Henry was a member of First Mennonite Church, where Frieda became a member.
On July 25, 1965, Frieda and Henry welcomed their daughter Sindy, bringing them much joy. On May 1st, 1993, Sindy married Ron Derksen. Frieda and Henry were now blessed with a son. On July 13th, 1994, Frieda’s and Henry’s grandson Kieran was born; followed by another grandson, Luke, on November 8th, 1996. God had richly blessed them. Frieda and Henry were given many years of good times as a family.
Frieda’s stepmother Elizabeth Derksen passed away on November 14th, 1994, and her father passed away on November 4th, 1999. In 2003 Henry became ill, and after many difficult months of suffering, Henry was allowed to “go home”, on September 25th, 2004, where there would be no more suffering.
Frieda was able to live actively and independently and on her own for several years after Henry’s passing; enjoying her long walks and coffee times with friends and family. Changes in Frieda’s health led to her no longer being able to manage life independently, and she moved to Calvary Place Personal Care Home in January 2022. She then moved to Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home on December 28, 2022, where she lived until her passing on November 21st, 2024.
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 9, 2024, at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street, Winnipeg, with Interment prior to service at 9:30 a.m. at Green Acres Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Frieda may be made to Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home, Calvary Place Personal Care Home, or Mennonite Central Committee.
