Fred Drewe
December 1, 1938 – November 24, 2024
Frederick Harold Drewe passed away peacefully this week at the age of 85.
Fred was predeceased by his parents Harold Kelly Drewe and Ella Sophia Damskov as well as his sisters Harriet Turk (John) and Marjorie Rohlman (Don).
He is survived by his partner Carolyn Peachell, first wife Judy Stanley, children Linda and Colin (Melinda) and grandchildren James and Matthew as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews and their families who he loved very much.
Fred was born at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg and was named after his uncle, Pte. Frederick John Drewe, who succumbed at Vimy Ridge in World War 1. He went to school at Glenelm, then Lord Selkirk where he excelled in scholastics and sports. He was a dominating starting pitcher in baseball and shined in both lacrosse and hockey.
After high school, Fred attended the University of Manitoba starting in Engineering and then earned his Bachelor of Arts degree, then Master of Arts, Bachelor of Education, Master of Education and finally completed his Ph. D at Michigan State University.
Fred’s passion was in teaching – he taught High School at Miles MacDonnell and eventually returned to his beloved University of Manitoba as Professor in Education, primarily focused on Cross Cultural Education. He found great joy and personal fulfillment touring with students around the world, including Mexico and Europe. He also taught nutrition in Africa at the height of the famine in the 1980’s.
He was also Director of the International Centre for Students at the University for several years. Fred loved working with international students and after retirement he became President of the Canadian Chinese Friendship society and enjoyed many trips to China and hosted delegates in Canada as well.
Fred loved his U of M sports, Winnipeg Jets, Minnesota Vikings, Michigan State Spartans but had a true passion for golf. While he enjoyed competing, he was most proud of the lifelong friendships gained through over 40 years at Southwood Golf and Country Club. Fred was a proud member and active mentor, known to try every gimmick to improve and was never hesitant to offer advice for others! He loved knowing that his grandchildren were into sports – especially golf – and was keen to learn of their progress.
We would like to thank all the staff and caregivers at Riverwood Square and Vista Park Lodge who have cared for Fred over the last number of years.
We will miss you dad. Celebration of life will be held for family members and friends.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society of Manitoba.
