On Sunday, September 29th, 2024, at 10:40 a.m., Denis passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 84 years at Actionmarguerite St. Vital.
Denis was predeceased, by nine months, by his loving wife and soul mate, Gertrude (Allard), to whom he was married for 61 years. He was also predeceased by his parents Jeanne (Burke) and Edmond J. St. Amant; his brothers: René & Bernard; and sister: Jeannine (& Hubert Gosselin). He leaves in his passing his children: Ginette, Paul (Jodi), Muriel (Jeff) Nielsen; and his beloved grandchildren: James, Melina, & Joe. His sister Yolande (Jean-Paul) Dupuis; brother: Gilbert St. Amant; his in-laws: Jeannette St. Amant, Claire-Annette, Jeannine, Anita, Angela and André (Sylvia) Allard; and many nieces and nephews.
Denis was born and raised in Southern Manitoba, in the small border town of St.Jean-Baptiste. Being raised by the town’s blacksmith and chief storyteller, he grew up to be quite the teller of tales himself. After graduating high school at the age of 17, he did several part time sales jobs. At 19 he started his first full time employment with the Provincial Government and trained to be a land surveyor in South-Eastern Manitoba. Over the decades, he would train many crew workers in the surveying trade, operate the Floodway gates, and measure soil saturation to help predict flood possibilities in the Spring. During this time, he made several close friends that lasted a lifetime.
Denis’s new career allowed him to marry the love of his life, “Gertie”. In July 1962, they bought their first home in St. Norbert, Manitoba, where for over 38 years, they raised their family and created lasting friendships. He relished reading and learning which transferred into practical skills such as drafting, building, and woodworking. He was a Jack of all trades who finished our basement, our enormous garage and even built us kids a pool.
Denis enjoyed road trips! He planned many summer vacations with his family to visit relatives in California. Later, he and Gertie would leave during the fall to drive out east to Ottawa and Windsor. During the winter, they would travel South to Arizona and back to California!
In August 2002, Gertrude and Denis moved to the Winnipeg Beach area, where they met many friends. After retirement, they truly enjoyed their time in the Interlake, where they entertained their family, went out for pickerel and chips at the local restaurants, and walked the boardwalk.
Denis’s love, strength, intelligence, sense of humor, and loyalty will be greatly missed. May you rest in peace as you join Gertie in the spirit world.
Please join us at a celebration of Denis’s life on Monday, October 21, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., at E. J. Coutu Funeral Home, 680 Archibald St., Winnipeg, Manitoba. Father LeGal will be presiding over the service.
