Cora Leigh Carpenter, 37, passed away on May 9, 2024. Born on December 7, 1986, in Surrey, British Columbia, she was her own person right from the beginning.
Cora was an incredibly curious child and she loved going to the beach to look for crabs under rocks and look at the starfish at the end of the pier at Crescent Beach, Surrey or hiking through Tynehead Park and fish hatchery, where salmon fry are released into the Serpentine River to head out to the ocean. She also learned to catch those fish with her father, Rick.
It was no surprise when Cora decided to study biology and eco forestry at the University of Winnipeg. She published a paper on pine Jack Pine and Red Pine while still in university and she was an avid reader of everything from the Spawn comics she collected when young to the classics, non-fiction to graphic novels.
She was always happiest when she was in the woods. Going for a hike with her was not only fun, but she taught us all about the native plants and trees on our path. She loved to go backwoods camping and canoeing with 20 year partner, Donna Smith. Cora was also proud of taking and excelling at a survival course in The Pas, in May. Brrrr.
Art was always a part of Cora’s life and she was fabulously creative. She would draw, paint, sculpt with clay and most recently was working with design and dyeing textiles. She didn’t ever have much of her own art around, as people always loved her creations and she loved to gift them to her friends and family.
Cora is survived by her mother, Shelley Allen, father Rick Carpenter and brother Aiden Carpenter, her house plant jungle and cat, Drocera. May she find peace and love on the other side.
