In 1989, after 36 years of service, Blair retired from the Manitoba Telephone System. During his time with MTS from 1967–1981, he coordinated the installation of microwave services throughout Northern Manitoba which brought live television to all the northern communities. While TV service was extended to 26 remote communities, regular telephone service was also provided to connect all areas of Northern Manitoba and allowed access to the world telephone network. After retiring, he worked part time for the Canadian Red Cross (1990–1995) and was a volunteer driver for the Canadian Cancer Society (1990–2006).

He was a member of both the Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite for over 65 years. He enjoyed participating and performing in many of the Masonic degrees. He was awarded the William Douglas Medal from the Masonic Grand Lodge of Manitoba in 1998, awarded the Walter C. McDonald Medal from the Valley of Winnipeg Scottish Rite in 2004, and coroneted with the 33rd Degree of Honorary Inspector General in Halifax in 2006.
Blair and Palma enjoyed many trips in their travel trailer, travelling throughout all ten Canadian provinces and many American states as far south as Texas and as far north as Alaska. Trips to England, Scotland, Turkey, Holland, and Italy, and cruises through the Panama Canal and around Hawaii were other highlights of Blair and Palma’s retirement years.
