It is with great sadness our family announces the sudden passing of our beloved Husband, Father and Friend Antonio “Tony” Matos on May/8/2024.
Tony leaves behind to mourn his wife of 46 years Theresia “Terry” Matos and 3 children Richard, Michael and Laura.
Also left to mourn is Tony’s predeceased sister Adelaide’s children in Portugal Cristina (Joao Carlos) children Joao and Ze Pedro, Rui (Mafalda) Daniel; Tony’s predeceased cousin Antonio’s wife Eduarda children Johnny (Kim), Anna (Paulo) children Sofia and Alicia; Tony’s cousin Laura (Manuel) children Bart and Sara; Along with many other cousins and friends.
Tony moved to Canada from Buarcos, Portugal at the age of 16 with his family Father (Jose), Mother (Adelaide), Sister (Adelaide), Uncle (Antonio), Aunt (Maria), Cousins Antonio and Laura.
Tony met his wife Theresia 49 years ago. Together they enjoyed many things in life whether it was travelling to Portugal, Mexico, Cuba, swimming together in the backyard pool or dancing with each other in the kitchen. Tony’s love for his wife was something very special and together, they built a beautiful home and family.
Tony was a member of United Association Local Union 254 for 46 years and took great pride in his work and met many people throughout his career. His children Richard, Michael and Laura all followed Tony’s footsteps into the construction industry. Tony mentored his children in their careers; Richard and Michael becoming successful Red Seal Steamfitters and Laura becoming a Senior Safety Officer. To say Tony was proud of his children was an understatement. Tony was beyond proud. His children always went to Tony asking for advice as Tony was a wealth of knowledge and gave his children the knowledge he had and the tools to become as successful as they are today.
Tony enjoyed many things in life. Fishing at Linklater Camp with his family and friends (Norm Beque and Co). Tony got the nickname “The Pickerela Kid” due to his great fishing abilities and always being able to find the walleye which he also passed on to his boys Richard and Michael. In the evening, Tony could be found sitting at the pond he built in the backyard watching his coy fish. Tony was proud of his Pond. Going to his children’s sporting events was something Tony loved and made it a point to attend Richard’s, Michael’s and Laura’s hockey, football and soccer games. Tony coached Laura’s soccer team in Laura’s younger years and could be seen at the edge of the sideline giving instructions to the team.
Watching soccer was another thing Tony loved. When Portugal was playing either the Euro or World Cup you could find Tony and his children dressed up in their Portugal Jerseys and on the edge of their seats. But the one thing Tony loved above all else was that Tony loved his family always making sure his wife and children were taken care of and loved them endlessly. Tony had a big heart and gave everything to his family. A devoted husband, father and friend, Tony left an everlasting mark in this world which will never be forgotten. Tony will be deeply missed by his wife, children, extended family and many friends.
Tony’s family would like to thank all who have reached out during this difficult time. A celebration of life will be announced at later date.
