Shelley’s Story
May, 2024
My husband Bob suggested I sit down and write my story. I immediately stated this was something I was not interested in doing. Upon reflection I changed my mind. Perhaps in some way it would be therapeutic and a good endeavor. So here goes.
I grew up on a small mixed farm in the south east corner of the province, near Fairlight, Saskatchewan. It was an awesome place to grow up and of course I am biased but I had the best parents one could have. I have two brothers and we each had our specific chores to do. This made me feel useful and an asset to the family and the farm. My mum always had horses and I loved riding and working with them. My other big interest was music and I studied piano attaining my grade eight conservatory and grade two theory (required for teaching piano) before I even finished high school. I attended Plainville country school until grade seven then went to Maryfield school.
After high school I attended college and received my Certified Nursing Assistant (Licensed Practical Nursing) certification. I worked at Regina General Hospital, Moose Jaw Union Hospital then Melfort Hospital.
I married Bob Wellar in 1973. I love being married to this wonderful man and sharing my life with him. We enjoy so many activities including down hill and cross country skiing, canoeing in northern Saskatchewan and golfing. I have to say I enjoy golfing very much. Summers at Kenosee Lake are wonderful and we have a membership at White Bear Golf Course.
We moved to Melfort in 1976 after purchasing a share in the James tire shop. We made so many great friends there. I worked at the Melfort High School as piano accompaniment for the choral classes. After that I worked at the Geordie Brant’s music store.
We moved back to Regina in March 1985 and Bob worked at the James Tire Head Office. I attended a few Business Study classes at SIAST college. I got a job working at Fabric Land and that was good as I did a lot of sewing. Shortly after that I became the Office Coordinator for the Provincial Alzheimer’s Society. Following that I worked as Executive Assistant for the Provincial Care Home Board of Directors and managed the office. Our office amalgamated with Saskatchewan Health Care Association (SHA). I became Program Coordinator in the Education Department. This worked well as I had experience working with the Home Care board of directors and coordinated their conventions and work shops.
I became a Jehovah’s Witnesses in 2008 and love our congregation and studying the Bible.
Bob and I were fortunate to retire early and spent about 20 winters (February and March) in Parksville BC. I am so grateful we had this time to travel, golf and enjoy so many activities.
Over the years I have enjoyed crafts such as cross stitch, candle making and sewing. I joined the adult coloring community several years ago and have spent many happy hours enjoying this hobby.
I was devastated to receive a diagnosis of stage three bowel cancer in 2023. I had a right hemicolectomy (bowel surgery) June 12, 2023 followed by 9 months of chemotherapy. The chemotherapy did not stop the progression of this awful disease and I now have a prognosis of a few months.
