Sheila Moween Dodds, nee Munro, born May 20, 1931, passed away at Tabor Home, Morden, Manitoba, on February 21, 2024. She was predeceased by her parents, Peter and Marjorie Munro, her brother Peter Munro, her sister Norma Ficek and brother-in-law, Joe Ficek, her brother, Bill Munro and sister-in-law Helen Munro.
She leaves to celebrate her life her daughter, Gloria Penner, (husband, Randy), son Earl Nash (wife Sylvia), son Randy Nash (wife Linda) and daughter Dale Owen (husband Pat). Missing her as well are grandchildren Kent (Jenna), Verne (Amber), Kyle (Joanne), Janelle (Jeff), Brett (Darryl) and Mark (Emily), 9 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Alvin Dodds (27 years) in 2021 and her ex-husband Francis Nash, in 1984.
Mom grew up on a farm near Reston, often walking the four miles to Reston to attend school.
Mom lived a full life as a farmer’s wife, entrepreneur, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother. She was a softball player, a lifelong curler and a golfer. She and Alvin enjoyed travelling to Newfoundland (the Briar and friend, Anne), Mexico, Texas, and numerous country music festivals in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
She loved being a Red Hatter with her friends from Reston and Pipestone. They named her “Tequila” Sheila because it rhymed; certainly not because she liked tequila. She enjoyed her weekly Happy hour crew, her square dance friends, local parades and many outings. One young friend said that Mom and Alvin were so cute. They came early and stayed right to the end of their wedding celebration. Another person smiled at the memory of Mom on “Still Standing” when she and her friends were spotlighted on the show.
Her strong will, tenacity and independence were important in starting up and owning the Reston Dry Cleaners and the Sears Outlet. She is described as being “feisty,” and “having a lot of fight in her”, also a “go getter with a big personality”. Mom was a strong vocal supporter of her town, Reston. Her letters to the local RHA ensured that her concerns were heard.
Mom loved to entertain, especially her family. Her pragmatism combined with her love of entertaining was evident when she decided to host her Annual New Years celebration in July rather than on a frigid January 1st. Many neighbours joined us or passed her house and wished all a Happy New Year!
Everyone continued to be amazed that Mom could always conjure up a meal from nowhere. The house, the Boler, or the fifth wheel.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Wiĺlowview Personal Care Centre in Reston. At Mom’s request there will be no funeral. Interment of ashes will occur later and perhaps a little party.
