The family of Robert (Bob) Smyth sadly announce the passing of Bob Smyth at the age of 97 years. Bob is survived by his wife of seventy and a half years, Kate (Cameron), sisters-in-laws Iola Smyth, Lorraine Smyth and Ethel Barta. Bob was Dad to Isabelle (Allan) Doblanko, Christine (Jerry) Wiens, and Donald (Lisa)Smyth, Grandfather to Janet Doblanko (Shaun Jones), Karen Doblanko, David (Naomi)Wiens, Lauren (Wiens) (Steve)Millar, Charla Smyth, Keegan (Amanda) Smyth, Tenille Smyth, Aidan (Melissa) Smyth, Cole Smyth, Noah Smyth, Anais Smyth, Chaise Smyth, Deasun Smyth, Treyvin Smyth, Dakota Smyth, and Ari Smyth, and Great Grandfather to Asa and Quinn Millar and Alexis and Evan Jones. Bob was predeceased by his parents Arthur and Mamie Smyth and his four brothers, Jim, William (Bus), Hugh and George, as well as sisters-in-laws, Amaret and Jean Smyth.
Bob was born on the homestead South of Kennedy and lived his entire youth on the farm. He told many stories about driving horses to work the land and harvest the crops. He took great pride in driving horses, not only then, but throughout his farm life. As soon as the tractor tires would spin in the winter, the team was brought in and driven until spring. Bob attended Highview School and then Kennedy, achieving Grade 10, which was a great accomplishment in those days. He used to ride horses and/or drive horses to school.
Bob married Kate Cameron on November 4, 1953 and over the next seventy and a half years, they would build a farm life together. They first lived on the John Kessler farm, but soon moved to live with Bob’s uncle, Robert Warner. They farmed there, raising polled Herefords, until they moved to the Albert Nicholay farm in the Saffordea District in 1963. Bob farmed there until 2008 and then he and Kate moved to Kennedy.
Bob loved to dance and would go to dances at Belleville School and, later on, would go to Old Time dances wherever and whenever he and Kate could go. Bob called square dances and Bob and Kate were seen on parade floats square dancing. Dad loved to teach young people to dance.
Bob will be remembered for his quick wit, his willingness to help, and his pride in his community. He could tell stories about most farms and families in the area. His reputation for braiding ropes for the community and far beyond will be a legacy he leaves behind. He loved his family and always wanted them to be close to him. The family is thankful for the many years of memories they have been able to create with Bob.
The family wishes to thank the doctors and staff at the Maryfield Sunrise Villa Centre and the Wawota Deer View Lodge for the kindness and caring they gave to Bob while he was a resident in both homes. We know he had the best of care with you.
