Jim Ferris of Elkhorn, Manitoba beloved husband of Susan Ferris and father of Ron, Gerry, Chris, Nick, Tracy and Kayla passed away at Elkwood Manor, Elkhorn Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at the age of 80 years.
The funeral service will be held at Elkhorn Elks Hall, Elkhorn Saturday, July 6, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. with Marianne Olfrey officiating. Interment will be in Elkhorn Cemetery.
For those who so desire, memorial tributes in memory of Jim may be made to Elkwood Manor Ladies Auxiliary, P.O. Box 172 Elkhorn, MB R0M 0N0.
Jim spent his early years in Elkhorn, and then moved to Souris, Manitoba as a young man where he worked at a service station learning his trade as a mechanic. He moved to the Okanagan in his early 20s where he worked as a mechanic and at White Western Star. It was in BC that he met and married Susan Ripley, a union that would last 55 years until his passing, and during which they raised 6 children.
In 1975, Jim decided it was time to take his growing young family back to Manitoba and join his parents Edna and Bert to work on the mixed grain and cattle farm that they had built. Not long after returning however, Jim’s father passed away, and in addition to taking care of his own family, Jim took on the responsibility for his mother and the farm.
Jim grew to be a very capable farmer. He was hard working, honest, really cared about his land and livestock, and could fix almost anything. He also had a creative side and wrote many letters and poems that spoke to his life and the world around him. He wasn’t afraid to share his opinions, but he also preferred to stay out of the limelight. He was a family man who was proud of his children and their accomplishments, and who enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Jim’s illness made his final years very challenging, but through the pain of his progressing cancer and treatments he continued to work hard, helping friends and neighbours whenever they needed a hand.
Jim leaves to mourn his loving wife, Susan, sons Ron (Haihong), Gerry (Alex), Chris (Haifeng), Nick (Karisa), and daughters Tracy and Kayla. He will also be missed by his grandchildren Cindy, Andrea, Clare, Sadie, Edward, Phoenix, Braxton, Kolt and Kiarah, and by his sister Judy Coe and family, sister-in-law Marjorie Ripley, and brother-in-law Edward Ripley and family.
The family would like to thank the nursing staff at Elkwood Manor, who made Jim’s last months as comfortable as possible, and whose smiling and gentle care gave both Jim and his family much comfort.
