Born October 12, 1947 in Virden, Craig grew up on a family farm north of Reston. In his youth he was active in golfing, fishing and duck hunting. He enjoyed playing cards with school classmates and his brother. During those years his older brother managed to take him on many misadventures which they both fortunately survived.
Craig graduated from Reston High School in 1965 and went on to attend the University of Manitoba, graduating with a Degree of Environmental Studies in 1969. The University had started a Landscape Architecture Program however they required a minimum of three students to begin classes. As he was the only student to apply he was forced to take time away. In the interm he worked at the University of Manitoba Campus Planning office with Bob Allsopp and then travelled in Europe and worked in London, England for one year. In 1971 he was able to enroll in the Landscape Architecture Masters Program along with Environmental Student graduates Fred Wilton and John Gerstmar. Craig was the first graduate from the Program in 1975.
Over the years he worked for Michael Hough in Toronto, the Garry Hildebrand office in Winnipeg and Saskatoon, Lombard North in Calgary and the Meewasin Valley Authority in Saskatoon.
He began a career in visual arts in 1980. In 1987 he took sculpture classes from Bill Epp at the University of Saskatoon. He worked with different media’s including photography, pencil drawings, pastels, charcoal, acrylic paint on mylar and metal sculpture. He has been represented in private galleries in Calgary, Saskatoon and Winnipeg.
Sometime during during the late 1980s Craig was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Although the disease ended much of his career in Architecture it certainly never paused his enthusiasm or creativity in the artistic world. Art and photography consumed his life in later years.
In 1992 he had his first solo art show at the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba where he displayed ” Sculptures “. This show was followed by ” Water Works ” in April-May, 1997 and ” Leaf Mandela’s ” December, 2011-January, 2012. In 2022 his past and recent work was exhibited in the Arch 2 Building University of Manitoba commerating the 50th Anniversary of the Landscape Architecture Masters Program. Also in 2022 the AGSM hosted what was to be his last show ” Emergent Meticulous “.
To all his acquaintances and friends he was known as a quiet, caring and gentle person.
Craig was predeceased by his parents John and Norma Milliken and is survived by his brother Ian Milliken, nephew Jarrett Milliken ( Katie and Athena ), and numerous cousins.
