Maggie Flett Obituary
Maggie Sarah Flett was born Saturday, September 26, 1936 in Old Crow, Yukon to Effie and Archie Linklater. She was a proud Vuntut Gwitchin (Dene) and is of the Wolf clan.
She was the oldest girl, in a family of 8 children: Archie Linklater (late), Robert Linklater (late), Maggie Flett (late), Irwin Linklater, Susie Linklater, Ronnie Linklater, Jimmy Linklater, William Linklater (late).
Mom was raised in her home community known as Old Crow. She was raised on the land with family. They lived trapping, hunting and fishing in areas that their ancestors also lived on since time immemorial.
Mom felt it was important for all of us to know our ancestral roots and where we came from. She was the great-granddaughter of Archdeacon McDonald, one of the first missionaries in the Yukon Territory. He translated the Bible and hymn books into the Gwichin language.
At the age of 9 years old she was sent to Boarding School in Dawson City, Yukon. The time and trip were traumatic and she talked of how she missed home. She was never sent back home due to government decision.
After residential school she relocated to Edmonton AB. She lived with her cousin, Millie Poplar (nee Tizya). They were sociable and had enjoyed some night life in the city, they had gone to a place called “DanceLand” where she met a handsome soldier, named George Flett.
In February 20, 1960 they were united in marriage and started to build their lives in Edmonton AB. Maggie was the proud mom of six children: Howard (Joan), Pat (Glenda), Georgina (Daniel), Neil (Lisa), Susan (Harold), and Jennifer (Jawfer) and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
When the family moved to the Opaskwayak Cree Nation in August 1970 they lived near dad’s side of the family and continued being on the land where Mom and Dad would go out and hunt and trap with other relatives and the rest of the family.
Mom received her Certificate of Teaching through Brandon University and then acquired her Bachelor of Education degree in 1979. She was hired by Kelsey School Division and was one of the first Indigenous teachers to work with KSD. She left KSD to work with Opaskwayak Educational Authority, first with Iskonekun School and then with Joe A. Ross. Mom’s educational career spanned 46 years up to the day she passed. She loved the children and working in the school system as a classroom elder. Mom loved being an educator and she was also active in the community and events to the day she left us.
Mom was a member of the Anglican Christ Church, serving on the vestry, Women’s Auxiliary, alter duties and a greeter. She sang in the choir and worked at various church events. Church members let us know she had been seen as an inspiration to many.
Mom was an avid gardener, bird watcher and overall nature lover. She always had a goal to regain her Gwichin language and even went to Old Crow, Yukon to learn and practice.
Mom loved curling and did so for many years, she was part of a team that won numerous ladies club championships and was inducted as a life member of The Pas Curling Club. Her participation in this sport took her to many bonspiels across the Prairies including Thompson, Saskatoon, Wetaskawin and other areas in Northern MB. Maria Moore quipped with a smile: “Maggie gained a lot of curling friends and was too good to curl with George.”
Mom loved to cook and bake and passed along her kitchen skills to her children. One of her personal recipes that we loved was her home made spaghetti and meatballs.
When we were a young family Mom and Dad would take us on family vacations out West and other families joined us. We enjoyed going to Klondike Days, Banff, Jasper, Drumheller and even to the water, we went to Victoria Island and Waterton Lakes.
Mom also travelled to Cancun Mexico and enjoyed road trips up the Alaska and Dempster Highway while visiting with family and friends. She did this whenever possible, she enjoyed trips to her home community to take part in going out on the land, visiting with family and attending celebrations.
It would have been a treat for you to see her watch Canadian football with the Edmonton Elks (Eskimos) being her favorite team, at times supporting the Saskatchewan Roughriders in support of her late son-in-law, Harold Young. In the privacy of her own home, the small, mild mannered, wee-woman turned into a CFL referee, yelling at the TV and getting disgusted, especially when her team was losing. Sometimes she would change the channel in anger.
In 2006 her husband of 46 years passed away, it was a very difficult time. Mom was a patient and loving caregiver during his time of sickness. When he passed she was a picture of strength and bravery. She placed flowers at his gravesite each year.
Throughout her life her children were her focus but all the rules changed when the grandchildren and greatgrandchildren arrived. Early morning ice cream (when we had to wait for sweets until after 12:00 noon), ordering take out, sending money for birthdays and other celebrations and sometimes just for nothing. Videos and pictures were so important and appreciated when she received them.
She was taken without warning and was a blessing to many, she was a little bright star in a mighty world. She always let us know how much we meant to her and she meant the world to us. She is resting now and we wait until we can hold her in our arms again.
We would like to thank all family, friends, and students who expressed sincere condolences and best wishes during our time of loss. It provided great comfort to our family, this showed us how much love the community had for our mom.
Rest Well Little Mum
