Bill McCorkill Obituary
Francis William McCorkill July 10,1939 – September 9, 2024
It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Francis William McCorkill at 85 years, surrounded by his family at The Pas Health Complex on September 9, 2024 .William better known as Bill was born on July 10, 1939 in Birch River, Manitoba to parents Harry and Rose McCorkill. He was the middle child of three children and had an older brother Robert and a younger sister Isabelle.
Bill was raised on a farm about 1 1/2 miles from Birch River. He attended Drury, a one room rural school 1 1/2 miles from his home. He enjoyed playing sports and games with other children at recess or dinner hour.
While growing up on the farm Bill worked hard helping his dad raise potatoes and raspberries to sale. When Bill left school he got a job with Manitoba Hydro as a lines man. After fourteen years he changed jobs and went to work for Manfor (Repap, now Tolko) in The Pas at the sawmill as a lumber grader. This allowed him to be home with his family at night. Tolko provided him with better wages and a pension. He loved his career. He always said it was near nature. He enjoyed it enough that he taught several courses for others to learn lumber grading to achieve their certificates in lumber grading.
He married Lynn and they raised four children; Trevor, Adrienne, Bryan and Michelle. While living at Bracken Dam.
In later years he bought a plot at Cormorant Lake where he built a large log cabin with his own hands. He jokes as only being just a rough carpenter. He always welcomed you in his home. Especially the neighbourhood men, kids and the many fishermen. Bill enjoyed making them a meal. It quickly became known as Bill’s Kitchen Cafe where the table of knowledge was formed and the group exchanged many stories and tried to solved the world’s problems. Bill always enjoyed seeing and talking to the birds and wild life that surrounded him. Bill also was a dog lover. Over the years he had a favourite dog with him most of the time. When one passed he would get a new dog and each one was special to him with a special name.
He also enjoyed gardening especially growing rose bushes, raspberries, rhubarb and white petunias. Bill enjoyed the older models of John Deere tractors which he had the pleasure of owning named David. This one day at age 70 Bill wanted to eat a pie and decided to try and make one. Bill quickly honed his pie making skills and would invite you to come and share a cup of tea and a piece of pie. Well that started an even more flurry of activity at Bill’s, can you make me this type of pie and of course he would. There was never a morsel left on the pie plate. Bill never was afraid to try something new so he would whip up a new pie recipes and even trying new delights and he became known as the “Pie Guy”. We will all remember those many scrumptious pies, chicken pot pies, cakes that will be truly missed by all who had the chance to taste them. He was always willing to give a helping hand. If you needed a part, tool or plumbing supplies Bill would say I think I might have what you need.
Bill made many good friends over the years and will be truly missed by all of them.
Francis William McCorkill leaves to mourn his wife Lynn McCorkill, Trevor McCorkill, Adrienne and Carlos Flores, Bryan and April McCorkill, Michelle and David Gwilt, along with grandchildren, Sister Isabelle, and many friends.
