Obituary
Passed on September 25, 2023
March 30, 1933 – September 25, 2023 It is with heartfelt sorrow we announce the passing of Betty Irene Sorenson. Mom passed away peacefully on September 25, 2023 at the age of 90. Our loss here on earth is our family angels’ gain.
Mom was born on March 30, 1933 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. In her earlier years, Mom loved to play baseball. Through baseball, she met Dad. She married Jim Sorenson on August 18th, 1951 and for most of their life resided on the family farm in Marquette, MB. Mom is predeceased by her husband Jim, parents Charlie and Tot Tully, William and Grace Sorenson, son Terry, granddaughter Kimberley Seggie and grandson Michael Seggie. Left to forever remember her are her children Ronald/Ted (Gail), Shirley (Jim), Elaine, Karen, Diane (Blair) and daughter-in-law Cheryl (Rob), grandchildren Stacy (Darren), Brent (Michelle), Michelle, Nicholas (Baila), Christopher (Morgan), Lindsay, Ashley, Zach, Chloe, Tyler (Dara), and great grandchildren Cody, Blake, Carson, Stella, Olivia and Victoria. Mom will be lovingly missed by many extended family members, friends, and neighbours.
Throughout her 90 years here on Earth, Mom worked very hard and instilled that work ethic into all of us. Whether it was working on the farm while raising us, taking an off the farm job to work at Bristol Aerospace or volunteering in the community, Mom stayed active and busy. Through her volunteering as a 4H leader, cooking at the Woodlands Seniors’ Lodge and assisting with the Woodland’s Adult Day Program, she met many friends and acquaintances. Mom, being a long-time member of the Woodlands Pioneer Museum Board, The Meadow Lea United Church and the Meadow Lea Hall, became a pillar of the community.
In her spare time, Mom loved to knit, crochet, embroider and sew. She enjoyed reading, coloring, puzzles, crosswords and wordsearch puzzles and more recently, diamond art. Mom spent her evenings content working on one of her many hobbies. Mom enjoyed old time dances and occasionally got away to travel. Some of her memorable trips were a road trip to Alaska, multiple trips to Vancouver Island, getting away to Nova Scotia and a bus tour to the East Coast.
Mom enjoyed her weekly visits to the local café where many friends and family would join her. Mom also enjoyed visiting many friends at the Lodge in Woodlands. Probably her greatest joy was when the grandchildren and great grandchildren would come to visit. There was always a counter full of home baked goodies and the treat cupboard was always stocked awaiting their arrival.
The family would like to thank Dr. Hicks and the nurses, health care aids and hospital staff at the Stonewall Hospital for the excellent care they provided Mom over the last 10 weeks.
In lieu of flowers a donation can be made in Mom’s memory to the Meadow Lea United Church, South West District Palliative Care, CancerCare or a charity of your choice.
A celebration of life will be held at Meadow Lea Hall on Monday, October 16, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. with a private interment to take place.
