Obituary of George Friesen
George C.S. Friesen, aged 87 years, of Steinbach, MB., passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, April 4, 2024.
He is survived by his loving wife Judy, his five children and their spouses and 14 grandchildren.
George was predeceased by his grandson Cash, son-in-law Walter, eight siblings and their spouses.
Dad was born into a large loving family. His dad was a pastor and was often gone, helping others. This meant that the children learnt to work hard at an early age, helping on the farm with chores, garden work, cleaning and cooking.
Dad ventured into Winnipeg at the age of 17 and got a job at CN but was called back home shortly after to work on the farm. After a couple of years, he headed back to the city and started installing furnaces. It was shortly after this that mom and dad met. He was 25, she was 21, and it was love at first sight. They dated a couple of years, got married and settled into life in the city until they bought the family farm.
Dad continued to do HVAC while farming on the side. He retired from HVAC in his late forties, converted the barn and got into hog farming. To fill his days he also drove school bus and worked at the Winnipeg arena. He thoroughly enjoyed working at the arena where he was a security guard. He met lots of people, was able to watch Jets games and collected a few of the Jets old hockey sticks.
In 2000, mom and dad decided to stop farming and moved to Niverville. They lived there for seven years and then moved to Steinbach. They stayed in a small bungalow on Walnut St before transitioning to Woodhaven.
It was in Steinbach where they enjoyed their retirement. Dad’s favorite spots were A & W and McDonalds where he was able to meet with his friends for coffee on a regular basis.
Dad was a faithful devoted husband and loving father who provided well for his family.
The memorial service will be held Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB.
A private family burial will take place at Hespler Cemetery, Niverville, MB, prior to the service.
