Agatha Friesen Obituary
Agatha Friesen (nee Peters), aged 87, passed away peacefully the evening of Wednesday, December 11th, 2024, at Rest Haven Care Home, Steinbach, MB.
Mom is survived by her loving husband Aron, and their sons, Aron (Mary Anne), Cornell (Karen), Ben (Ramona), Tim (Cathy), and Val (wife of her son Jake) and her thirteen grandchildren (Travis, Candace, Nicholas, Tristan, Jeremy, Lindsey, Kyle, Joel, Stephanie, Connor, Kaitlyn, Jessica, and Madison) and fourteen great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her son Jake.
Mom was born June 27th, 1937, on a farm in the district of Mitchell. As a two-year old she lost her Dad, and having a father was a longing she carried with her throughout life. She went to school in Mitchell and excelled in both academics and sports, and she was proud of always being picked for first base instead of one of the boys. Mom and Dad saw each other across the dance floor when Mom was almost 16 and that was the beginning of what would become their life together. They married on July 17th of 1955.
Their first years together were in New Bothwell and Steinbach, until they purchased their farm in Randolph, where they lived and worked for almost four decades. Their home and farm filled with five sons over the first ten years. Mom was a farmer at heart, and a true partner in their farming operation. She participated in all aspects of the farm from tilling, seeding, throwing bales, and combining to looking after the poultry. The 80 John Deere tractor was her favorite, but she never allowed pigs on the yard because she didn’t like them. She cared for the yard, the garden, and the house. She worked tirelessly and joyously – she took great satisfaction in doing a job thoroughly and well.
Mom was a woman of deep faith and prayer. This praying was exercised well in light of the boys that they were given. She most often expressed her faith commitments through doing – she was a lifelong Sunday School teacher, sang in choirs, sewed blankets for MCC, knitted scarves and toques, and loved to serve and welcome people into their home – she was deeply hospitable. She was generous with her love, her time, her energy, and her money….and her ice cream later on in life.
Mom was also rather competitive – she won many a Randolph crokinole tournament, and her grandchildren learned quickly that grandma wasn’t going to let them win – they would have to earn their wins.
Whenever Mom faced challenges in her life, including breast cancer, she faced them with courage. Her wisdom as a result enriched the lives of many others. Her faith stands as her greatest legacy for all of us.
We want to thank Silver Linings Care Team for their understanding and patience, recognizing her humanity even in the midst of her character-changing memory loss. We, the kids, most especially want to thank our father for his tireless love and care for our Mom – it was a priceless example of the beauty of a 69 year marriage.
