Larry Nicol Obituary
Larry Einar Nicol
The Nicol family invites you to a celebration of Larry’s life to be held on Tuesday, July 16, 2024 at 1pm, at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 42 (Selkirk), 403 Eveline Street, Selkirk. Friends and family are encouraged to share a favorite story or remembrance about Larry (Nic) during the event.
Larry Einar Nicol
Surrounded by loved ones, Larry passed away peacefully at home on June 7, 2024 at the age of 72, following an 18-month battle with cancer.
He is survived by his son, Duane (Erin); brother, Lorne (Wilma); partner, Val Ranseth; and numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces. He was predeceased by his father, John, his mother Lilja, his beloved wife of 37 years, Arlene and son, Sean.
Larry (a.k.a. Nic) was born and lived the majority of his life in Selkirk. If you were out with Larry in town he was always bumping into people he knew, greeting them with his smile. Larry had many jobs in his life, the longest being Manitoba Hydro where he was a surveyor for many years, later moving into the office and retiring after over 20 years of service. After retirement, Larry and Arlene enjoyed bowling and traveling. They both volunteered and served on the executive with the Selkirk Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 42.
Larry loved his family. He was a dedicated father and husband. The sudden loss of Sean in 2007 then Arlene in 2014 was devastating for him. Afterwards, he enjoyed family trips with Duane and Erin to Las Vegas and Kamloops and special son and father drives down to Texas.
In the last 7 years, Val and Larry met and enjoyed retired life with great memories at the legion, listening to music, wintering in Texas and casino trips. Larry was warmly accepted into Val’s family and he loved spending time with Jennifer, Joseph, Trish, his “grandkids” Winter and Enoch.
Larry was funny and joking around was to be expected. He teased because he loved. His mischievous grin and wink were endearing. He made friends easily and had a network of cherished life-long friends.
Larry was curious and loved to learn which led to many interests. Listening to music and playing guitar were a big part of his life. He was artistic, dabbling in: photography; drawing, painting; woodworking, wood carving, and pencil colouring. He immersed himself into computers and gadgets and was an avid reader of fantasy novels.
Many thanks to Dr. Wong, the many doctors, nurses, and staff who provided dad with excellent care. Thank you, Val for your dedicated care throughout so Larry could stay home where he wanted to be. Thanks to the Selkirk Legion for the mobility equipment lending. There were many others that assisted and visited during these final months and we remember and appreciate it all.
