James Kidd Obituary
JAMES KIDD
Peacefully, on Monday, December 9, 2024, at Red River Place, James Kidd, aged 97 years of Selkirk, MB, passed away.
Left to lovingly remember him are his children Laraine (Ernie) Benjamin, Janet (Albert) Sheppard, James (Sharlene) Kidd, and John (Tonja) Kidd; grandchildren William (Dayna) Benjamin, Mary-Jane (Craig) Feeke, Allan Sheppard, John (Maryam) Sheppard, Emma, Alexandria, Ceilidh and Jeffery Kidd; and great-grandchildren Silas, Cooper, Emily, Preston, Yazdad and Ashkan.
James, also known as ‘grandpa’ and ‘papa’ was a remarkable man, exceptional father, husband and friend. He met and married the love of his life, Mary Ellen Giroux, on August 26, 1950, and they started their family soon after. He completed his GED and went on to work at Manitoba Rolling Mills in Selkirk for many years. He worked at many jobs, including TV repair man to supplement the family income. He was an extremely talented individual building and wiring his own home on Sutherland Avenue. He was involved in many artistic endeavors, including wood carving.
He was a proud wood carver and produced many woodworks which he graciously gave to family and friends. One of his larger pieces is displayed at the Marine Museum in Selkirk, the other, a wooden cross made from wood from St. Peters Dynevor is on display in Scotland. He was the oldest standing member of Knox Presbyterian Church and served as a Church Elder for many years. James and Mary were able to travel to various places throughout their years together. When Mary was no longer able to travel, James took a trip to Scotland and through to Europe celebrating his 79th birthday in Paris. He celebrated his 90th birthday in Gibraltar. He enjoyed curling in the winter and lawn bowling in summer while he was able. He was technologically gifted and spent much time on his computer and IPad and enjoyed doing Sudoku and working on puzzles. His memory was razor sharp until the last few weeks of his life and he enjoyed nothing more than sharing stories of his life with people. When asked by a nurse what the secret to his longevity was, he simply said “family”.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 19, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. in the Knox Presbyterian Church, Selkirk, MB.
