Surrounded by her two daughters Shayne and Sherry, our mother Evelyn Murray Wesley, 90 years young of Selkirk, MB passed away peacefully on February 9th, 2024.
Left to cherish her beautiful memories are her children Randy Wesley (Wendy), Shayne Hamilton (Larry Hewlko), Sherry Anania (Gino) and Jody Wesley; grandchildren Chris Wesley (Jessica), Ashley Hamilton (John), Bryce Hamilton (Chantel), Jeff Hamilton, Wes Loewen (Cassandra), Jacquelyn Loewen (Christian), Christina Anania (Drew), Gino Anania Jr. (Kahli), Michelle Anania, Nico Anania (Acksanna), Jackie Anania, Dylan Fredborg (Tracy) and Shayne Fredborg (Bek) and 12 great grandchildren. Evelyn is also survived by her sister-in-law Helen Koterla and many cousins, nieces and nephews, special friends Susan and Jennie.
Mom was predeceased by her husband Frank Wesley (Wozlowski) in 1972, her parents George and Mary Koterla, sisters Noreen (Bill) Nerbus and Irene (Gordy) Saltner and brother Ernie Koterla and Henry who died in childhood, her daughter-in-law Yvette Wesley and nieces Rhonda Saltner and Kelly Golembiski.
Evelyn was born on April 18, 1933, in Selkirk, MB. She grew up in Gonor, MB where she completed her Grade XI. In her teens, she worked at her dad’s “George’s Chip Shop” in Grand Marais. After high school she went on to work at Great West Life as a clerical worker and following her marriage she worked for Blue Cross and Manitoba Medical Services. During the first year she lived in East Selkirk, she taught sewing with the 4H Club. Mom attended Red River College to obtain her certificate in Geriatric Studies followed by a Business Computer certificate. Mom was also a supervisor with the Manitoba Home for Girls for many years, then onto Livingston Distribution Centers as a Data Clerk. She also worked on-call as matron with the Selkirk Detachment of the RCMP.
Evelyn will be remembered for her love, kindness and lasting mark she left on the hearts of her family. In January 1952, she married the love of her life Frank Wesley. They went on to have four children who she was so proud of. Family togetherness was important to mom and every time we got together as a family, she would quietly sit back and watch everyone with a huge and happy smile. Mom resided in the family residence on Heap Avenue for 63 years and relocated to Woodland Courts for the past 2 1/2 years. She enjoyed her new friendships, bingo, entertainment, and really enjoyed the “Fireside” Chat Ladies group.
Mom’s true passion was volunteering and her charity work. She volunteered at The Betel Nursing Home helping with activities, taking photos and creating a “Photo wall”. She volunteered at The Selkirk General Hospital gift shop for over 20 years, where she was the President of both Selkirk & District General Hospital Ladies’ Auxiliary and of the Gift Shop. She raised funds by creating floral arrangements, crocheting articles and kept the gift shop in full operation. She received an outstanding award for “Volunteer of the Year” from the Interlake Regional Health Authority in 2010 for raising funds at the gift shop large enough to provide TVs, defibrillators and other medical supplies in the ER, digital muscle stimulators and a rehab treadmill, plus many other much needed equipment. She was elected to the committee to oversee the Palliative Care outdoor garden and pavilion.
Mom loved to crochet items like afghans, scarves, slippers, ponchos, neck warmers and baby outfits. She participated in numerous craft sales around the Interlake and every year people looked forward to purchasing her crocheted items. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, sewing, reading, and most of all having her family around her.
We would like to thank the staff at The Selkirk Regional Health Center for their tender and compassionate care, to Woodland Courts staff and residents for their friendship and support and to Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk, MB for taking care of all the arrangements.
A special thank you to grand daughter Ashley Hamilton, who spent countless hours at the hospital helping our family and her Grannie move through to her transition.
In keeping with her wishes, there will be a private graveside service.
“May she rest in peace surrounded by the love she so generously gave throughout her life”
