Elizabeth Thorsten Obituary
Elizabeth Rose (Betty) Thorsten
Elizabeth Rose (Betty) Thorsten of Winnipeg Beach, Manitoba passed away on January 31, 2024, at the age of 85.
Mom taught us first and foremost that we could do anything that we set our minds to. She created a home that combined firm boundaries with unconditional love, always putting her family’s needs ahead of her own. Born in 1938, Mom was a child of the Great Depression whose family struggled to carve out a life on an Interlake farm. These challenges bred a fierce resolve and strength of character, the thread of which will be part of her legacy. She met dad (Bruce) who was stationed nearby at Gimli Air Force base and became smitten watching him play for the base hockey team. They were married in 1957 and were inseparable in person and spirit until dad passed in 2011. They travelled the world for work and adventure, eventually settling back in Brandon in 1984, before retiring back where it began on the farmstead near Teulon in 1999. They stayed in the Interlake area reconnecting with friends, family, and the rural lifestyle that they loved. Mom maintained a love of gardening, fishing, and the outdoors throughout her life. She was very active, independent, and energetic throughout her life, and had a great memory for everything, especially anything related to her large extended family and ancestry. Mom inspired a sense of infinite possibilities in her family, as well as a culture of caring, warmth and love.
Mom is survived by her brother Larry (Sonja) Skwarek of Kamloops, BC, her children Lori (John) Pietracci of Winnipeg, Bryan (Tina) Thorsten of Calgary, Robert (Pamela) Thorsten of Winnipeg and Lynne (Scott) Pawluk of Winnipeg Beach, grandchildren Dustin (Charity) Thorsten, Caitlyn Pietracci, Shawna (Matt) Johnson, Trevor (Missy) Pawluk, Nastassja Thorsten (Lily), Anika Thorsten (Stefan), Alyssa Thorsten (Colton), Ashley (Lane) Malcolm, Alana Sheehan, and Alex (Taylor) Sheehan, and great grandchildren Tristan, Joel, Leah, Maddy, Elly, Emerson, Bennett, Declan, Riley, Blair, Kyler and Emmet. She was predeceased by her husband Roland Bruce Thorsten as well as her parents Walter and Jean Skwarek (Strileski) and sister Joyce.
We would like to thank the staff at the Gimli Community Health Centre as well the Betel Home in Gimli for the truly exceptional level of care provided to mom.
A celebration of Mom’s life will be held at the Gilbart Funeral Home, 50 1st Avenue in Gimli, February 9th at 11:00 am followed by a luncheon.
