Garry Halwas Obituary
Garry Wayne Halwas was born on February 4, 1953 in Russell, Manitoba to Paul and Doreen Halwas. He passed away peacefully at the Sandy Lake Care Home on December 20, 2024.
Garry grew up on the family farm north of Russell. He became a farmer at a young age and a knack for being creative “in the field”. Garry always had the spirit and grit of an entrepreneur and was never scared to try new ventures in agriculture. You could always find hm in the shop building and modifying farm equipment with family members and employees or jotting down ideas on napkins around a table with friends. The hay plant was a testament to one of Garry’s many visions and was a time when Garry got to work alongside with his boys that just graduated. Parked in the Timothy’s Hay fields with Spud was Garry’s favorite way to catch a July sunset. He not only loved conducting the orchestra to get the hay off the field, but had a passion for marketing and this was his chance to pursue agriculture on a global scale. The best seed he ever sowed during his years was the love of farming and agriculture in his sons and grandchildren.
Garry always enjoyed holding gatherings, weather it was a shop party, family get together at the cabin or Zimmer farm, golf tournament or Christmas party with Saki that he had brought from Japan. Garry loved to entertain and found ways to make it memorable. The moment the hay was off the field and in the shed, Garry was in the plant kitchen cooking up roasters of crab legs for the whole crew to celebrate. He then advanced his culinary skills and would amuse the crowd by preparing raw fish and meat for everyone to try. He would then offer it up with his favorite line… “Eat it”.
Garry had several chances to travel around some of the world. He went on numerous trips to Japan, South Korea, Ukraine, Sweden, Hawaii, and Mexico. On these trips he would dabble with some business, quiz the locals on agriculture, and try the local cuisine in search of some odd treat he could share when he got home. He would always seem to find eclectic things on his trips that were mostly antiques, pictures and art. These items became a rustic flair backdrop on his home, cabin and office. He truly had a distinct style of decorating that brought both comfort and conversations.
When he was younger, he liked hunting and nature. He had an amazing egg collection as a kid. He always enjoyed socializing with his friends and many he became affectionately known as Hoot.
As his farming days slowed down, Garry took up a new favorite pastime of driving around in his Chevy half ton with his black labs and when he finally retired from the field, he was best known for delivering treats of half melted ice cream sandwiches, cantaloupes and canned goods to the field. Sometimes even the neighbors were lucky enough to get a meal dropped off as well. It was always a bonus if utensils were included.
We are sure Garry is still driving around with his shades on, the window rolled down, and his favorite dogs riding shotgun. He was one of a kind.
Garry is predeceased by his father Paul, mother Doreen, brother Daryl, sister Joan and brother-in-law Doug Hiller.
He is survived by his sons Chris (Danielle Beischer) grandchildren Luck and Sage and his son Mark (Amanda Drebit), sister Shirley Ciprick and brother Ron Halwas.
