The following obituary was originally published in the Portage Citizen on April 18th, 2018, written and published by the late Don Pelechaty.
Kathleen passed away at 311 Brandon Avenue, Saturday March 31, 2018. She was predeceased by her father and mother John Joseph O’Neil and Margaret Anne Shields, and by her son Edward Ronald (Ned) Pelechaty, her sister Jean (Bob) Einfeld of Vernon, B.C. and her brothers Maurice (Vera) of Brantford, Ont., Justin (Gladys) of Mesa, AZ. and Edward (Molly) of Portage, and Annie Andrich, her dear friend and confidant. Kay treasured all who have gone before her and they will welcome her home. Kay was born in an old log house on what was then the Dyson Pickle Farm, later Rennie’s. She was delivered by Mrs. George Rennie as they waited for Dr. Rennie. Kay grew up in the North Ridge District and spent a happy childhood on the family farm. Through this Kathleen developed a lifelong love of horticulture.
Her father had trained under an expert farmer, Francis Ogletree at the turn of the century Old Fort Farm. Mom surrounded herself with flowers and in the Spring the O’Neil farm was awash in the scent of lilacs and sweet peas that lined the driveway. Kay loved her beautiful gardens at Island Park Farm and Countess Avenue. She was a long-standing member of the Portage Horticultural and Garden Club and she enjoyed the friendships as much as the nature walks. Mom kept her memory active and sharp to the end through her delight in reading and discussion. She was interested in books on ecology, plant culture, travel, local history and holistic medicine. She and Dad had many years together riding their horses Goldie and Flicka over the Island trails, they loved Hawaii and wintering in Mesa, AZ. There the highlight was the Portage re-union in February.
Every summer weeks were spent at their Delta cottage enjoying the company of such good friends as Vic and Gwen Pragnell, Claire and Ted Keogh, Jack and Betty Andrich, Earl and Ella Brown, Don and Mabel Gray, Claire and Jay Carroll, Edna and Roy Carroll, Margie and Tom McFadden, Janet and Jimmie Sanderson, Clara and George Sitter.
When Kay married Jack Pelechaty, she struck out on a new exciting phase of her life – meeting Jack’s many business contacts. She supported her husband in his career, the family business, the Portage Abattoir and his various ranching and farming interests. Kay was proud of the local industry that Jack had developed. and she helped him with the social aspects of business development. Together they supported the local 4-H calf show at the Portage Fair fostering higher auction prices from local and Winnipeg buyers such as T. Eaton Co. and Hudson Bay Co., and then also through the meat packing plant promoting the sale of this exceptional beef through local meat markets. The Portage Abattoir in the fifties supplied much of Manitoba’s meats as an authorized replacement facility for the then on strike Burns & Co., Swifts and Canada Packers answering the needs of 27 Safeways as well as numerous Portage meat shops, restaurants, government and military institutions. Jack was a natural business man and had indeed begun his business career on a horse drawn delivery wagon for Bailey’s Bakery, which he sold bread at six loaves for a quarter. Jack pulled himself up by his bootstraps, believed in hard work and honest dealing. His bankbooks from 12 years of age show endless deposits of twenty-five cents, never a withdrawal. Jack also apprenticed with “Batt Brothers”, Percy and Ashley, who operated an early shop and meat packing plant. Later Jack worked with Ernie Burk in the retail meat business, and with Tom Moran and Fred Andrich learning cattle buying and meat packing at which he excelled.
Kay loved her home on Island Park and lavished attention on its decoration. Edith Holden painted the murals, Joe Surmac created the mahogany panelling and the inlaid bar backed by white marble and fronted by warming calf skins. The bar stools were happy memories of the heyday of MacDonald Base’s Officers Mess of the 1950’s. Kay had a life-long appreciation of antiques, especially items from Portage’s history. Kay enjoyed her old furniture, silver and china. The trees on their home grounds were all colour-lit in the 1950’s. Oil paintings graced the walls and Persian rugs added richness underfoot. Kay was always a gracious hostess and loved a party! Even past 90 she could step a fast fox trot. She had great memories of the fabulous music from the twenties and thirties. Those were the lovely old songs she had known from youth. Being Irish she was very sentimental, I am going to miss that! Mom kept a lovely home and just as with her Dad, music could bring a tear to her eye. Whenever we heard great pieces like “Spring Time” by Tommy Dorsey -we would phone and let each other know. I am going to miss that! Mom kept a lovely home that reflected her exuberance for life and her boundless creation and enthusiasm. Mom helped us as a saleswoman at Hargreaves Drugs and her Chanel salesmanship topped us for Chanel sales in Manitoba for 1974.
Mom was always ready to help and cared for nieces for long periods when there was illness in the family. She always had a meal for a tramp and kind words for the troubled. Although she had experienced personal loss and sorrow in the tragic loss of her son she remained to the end a woman of strength, hope in God’s grace, faith in mankind and her own integrity. She was a very strong Irish woman and proud that after 184 years in Canada her blood was still pure Irish. I suppose because of this Irish failing she was strong in her opinions and always an ardent supporter of the underdog. Elections at our place were usually sad events.
Kathleen leaves to mourn, her son John Donald Pelechaty and wife Donneé of Portage la Prairie, daughter Janis Kathleen on Countess Avenue, grandchildren Laura Hargreaves of Victoria and Mr. and Mrs. Cameron Hargreaves (Gail) of Winnipeg, sister-in-law Frances Tobin (Bill) of Mesa, AZ. Our family has been very touched by the outpouring of affection and fond remembrances. A celebration of Mom’s life will be held as we hold our annual Palliative Care Garden Party and Art Walk this July 22, 2018. Donations to that worthy cause are always appreciated.
“May her memory be a blessing”. A line from her favourite song, “Goodnight Sweetheart, In My Dreams I’ll See you, Goodnight Sweetheart, Goodnight.”
