THE ADVENTURER!
Born in Switzerland, Marcel and Marie Corthey decided to move to Canada, taking Simone and brother Gilbert, 6 months before WWII broke out.
Meeting up with family in Sperling, MB the family settled on a farm close to Portage la Prairie. After several years the family moved to a Pine Ridge Farm where now Birds Hill Park is situated. She spoke fondly of going to school by horse drawn carriage and winter sleigh. Gilbert, being her only friend and playmate for much of that time. Yet again, the family moved to Fort Rouge, Winnipeg. Simone, after finishing school and working, maintained friendships along the way. Through Virginia Litchie and Helen Gushulak, Simone met the love of her life, Bill Gushulak.
Together they would build a hard working, adventurous life bearing three children along the way. With the help of family, friends and dear neighbors they worked to build a life of camping, fishing and travel which at that time was quite rare.
After Bill’s passing in 2005 Simone continued to camp and travel with family and friends. Mom loved nature and saw the beauty in things that most people miss. Along the way Simone knit sweaters and baby sweater sets for friends and family she also picked up cross stitching as a hobby and creative outlet. Her works, very intricate and beautiful are treasured pieces of art now in the hands of family.
Simone is survived by her children Dean (Cathie), Darlene (Richard) and Sandy (Dollard), brother Gilbert and his family, sister-in-law Stephie and her family, five grandchildren; Daniel, Gordon, Michelle, Lara and Keara, four great grandchildren Mason, Bennie, Meera and Oliver and dear friends Lorrain, Marcie, Sue and Virginia.
